Inverts like corals, shrimp and crabs have a low impact on your biological filtration. You can pretty much add these at will. Just keep an eye on dkH and calcium if you're adding a lot of stony corals. Fish should be added slowly. No more then one or two per week. You need to allow time for...

Phosban comes with a media bag. Chemipure Elite comes in a media bag. You can use either of these in area's of high flow. What kind of filtration are you using? You can toss a bag in a HOB filter if you use one, in a canister filter or between baffles in a sump. I use a "Media Reactor" which...

    Salt mixes

I'm all for a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality, but I'm not sure if buy this. Unless you do very very large water changes, the transition is going to be gradual. I switch between natural sea water, IO Reef Crystals and Tropic Marin all the time. I also do frequent 30% water...

Duncan coral help needed (UPDATE possible emergency!!!)

My Duncans have been one of my hardiest corals. It doesn't like too much flow or too much light. It does like to be fed. I'd say medium light, low flow and some targeted feeding until it really settles in is the way to go.

    thinking about hard corals

Keep your dkH and calcium up. Keep your phosphates down. Make sure you have enough flow and you should be fine. The higher you keep your dkH, the faster stoney corals will grow. Too high and you will run into issues with calcium precipitation. I try to keep mine around 9 or 10. Higher...

Is this hobby always so frustrating?

I would be worried about phosphates with your previous overfeeding and no method of exporting them. Phosphates will contribute to algea growth, stunt coral growth and can even harm corals at high concentrations. You add at least some phosphates every time you feed. Some food has higher...

    Giant Green Duncan advice

I've had a colony of Duncan's for about a year. I love these corals. They've always seemed like the toughest corals in my tank. They thrived through phosphate spikes, large temp swings, questionable water from a spent RO membrane... Then I had a nasty Majano Anemone outbreak. I added a...

I think you are asking for trouble. I can't think of any way other then using a check valve to keep from syphoning most of your tank water back into the sump when the pump shuts off. Check valves can and do fail. I don't think I would want to risk coming home to an empty tank and a flooded...

Ugh do I feel like an idiot...

I agree with pretty much everything Flower said except for replacing bioballs with rock rubble. Some people do it, but I personally don't see the benefit. Bioballs and rock rubble accomplish the exact same thing. Surface area for beneficial bacteria. The only difference that I can see is...

I see. Instead of doing a standard overflow/return, you are going to treat it like a closed loop and return it through holes in the back. I suppose that should work if your overflow is capable of handling the amount of water coming back into the tank from your return pump. You may want to look...
