Another new guy to the hobby. Need suggesstions.

I have to admit, I didn't read all 12 pages of this thread. So you have to excuse me if I'm speaking out of turn, but why are you drilling holes for power heads? Most power heads stick to the side with magnets and/or suction cups. You can drill holes for a closed loop system where you have an...

    Harlequin Shrimp feeding

I was recently in my LFS and I saw the biggest, baddest looking Harlequin Shrimp that I had ever seen. I had been on the fence about picking one up for a while. So I had done some research and had an idea of what this entailed. I couldn't resist purchasing this big, beautiful shrimp. I...

    180 Reef Stocking list

Wow. I didn't know Yellow Watchmen were that aggressive. I've tried adding them hoping they will move in with my pistol shrimp, but for some reason I just don't have any luck with them. They either jumped out or ran afoul of something (possibly the mantis that took forever to catch) in my...

    180 Reef Stocking list

Have you had any issue's with that Bristletail Filefish? I've recently added one to my tank to see if it would eat majano's. I haven't seen it eat majano's or aiptasia, but it does nip at my leathers and zoa's. I've been debating taking him out, but he really hasn't done any damage YET...

i got a rbta for 10 bucks and it is under my paly rock ?

My BTA spent about 10 months on the underside of a rock at the back of the tank where I couldn't get to him to feed him. He started out as a little more then two inches. Over those 10 months he shrank down to a little less then one inch. Today I finally broke down and flipped the rock he was...

    SCORE!

Nice pick up! I'd love to upgrade to something that size, but I don't think the wife would forgive me if I got rid of our couch to make room for a bigger tank.

    180 Reef Stocking list

I like having a supporting cast of interesting fish to go along with my big beautiful fish. I love watching my Flame Hawk move from perch to perch looking for prey. He's a great fish if you don't mind losing some small peppermints. I had three Midas Blennys jump out of my tank before I wised...

Ugh do I feel like an idiot...

I'll expand on my previous post a little. 20 years ago we used undergravel filters because we didn't know any better. The idea is that the bubble towers move water through the sand so that bacteria in the sand can convert ammonia to nitrites and nitrites to nitrates. There are two problems...

Ugh do I feel like an idiot...

A: The UG filter is going to do more harm then good. Return it or throw it in the trash. B: The Wet/Dry along with the live rock is plenty. Just be sure to not let the bio balls in the Wet/Dry get nasty or they can become a nitrate factory. C: I'm not sure what "coral sand" is. Crushed...

    Limewater for top offs

Thanks for the info. I'm still trying to decide what I want to do as a long term solution. I think that in the interim I am going to keep my top off how it is just adding RO/DI water and make a simple DIY kalk dripper.

    Limewater for top offs

So I guess the pH Controller keeps the top off pump from turning on if the pH gets too high? What are some decent brands/models for the controller and pump? A quick google search of "Variable-Speed Peristaltic pump" is showing pumps around $700. That's not going to happen.
