what chemicals in a new tank

If your parameters are good and the tank is healthy, then I don't see any reason to stop adding that stuff... but IMO it is unnecessary. What is your alkalinity and calcium levels?? The purple up needs to be used as other additives, TEST then add.

what chemicals in a new tank

There is no reason to add chemicals to a new tank. Water changes is all that will be needed for now. Even in a mature tank coral vite will just increase your nutrient levels. IMO this is just another product made to take our money. Instead of using purple up, I'd just keep your calcium and...

    How many "k"?

That's true but the reason is because the lower kelvins produces a higher PAR.

Particles coming into tank threw return line-?

Sense you already cleaned the sump... the pump could probably use a cleaning also. I'd give it a few days to see if it clears up. If not, try to find out if it's air bubbles or something else.

How to make a hood for MH?

If you're going to do it yourself search for canopy designs here and elsewhere. I know I've seen some diagrams here on canopies.

    How many "k"?

I agree with the above... 10k MHs with actinic VHOs, PCs or HOs. Something more to confuse the decision. The way the bulb actually looks and the PAR it produces also has a lot to do with the bulb you buy and the ballast you are running. The best way to decide IMO is to look at friend's...

    Adding sand to existing tank???

btw, curing the sand will coat the sand grains with bacteria which will help prevent clumping.

    Adding sand to existing tank???

Put the sand in a 5g bucket and fill it with water from your tank. Stir it really good, add a pinch of food and let it sit for a week or so... stir it daily.

    Adding sand to existing tank???

It shouldn't cause a cycle. Remember, if you are using dry sand you need to cure it first.

You have something backward. You are correct in you should get 1g of good water to 4-5g of waste water. Pressure should be around 60-65psi.

    When to do water changes

The water readings that one gets should not effect their water change schedule unless they are showing a problem. Otherwise a regular routine should be followed... I like Birdy's comment about a oil change in cars... water changes is a pro-active method of avoiding problems.

    Converting 30gal FO to Reef

MHs are needed to keep some corals and (IMO) all anemones but there are many corals that will do fine under fluorescent lighting. Starting with MHs is a great idea IMO... I was just wondering. will the PS, HOT canister filter and a good cleaning crew be enough w/o an S/F setup or W/D set...

    Converting 30gal FO to Reef

    1. Why MHs?? I'm not saying not to but is there a reason you want MHs? There are a few members here with MHs on 30g tanks so hopefully one will chime in. 2. Circulation can be obtained with powerheads... IMO the real issue is nutrient export and room to put equipment. 3. Sounds good!!
