Pick ONE Fish for my 30 Gallon-Semi-Reef

I have a extra tank sittin around, and enough extra equipment to start my own fish supply store. I am going to set up a small semi-reef. I'm thinking maybe just one or two peculiar or unusual fish. Pick it for me----and tell me why. TIA Hermit [ November 25, 2001: Message edited...

    Eco-System Hang On 40

I would like to hear from anyone who uses or has used the Eco-System filtration system. Good or bad. I need hands on experienced users please. If no responses, I'll assume no one has used this system. TIA Hermit

How longs should lights stay on?

I totally agree with Reef Master. I am going to assume that your given times are in military time, so your MH's are on for 12 hours, correct? IMHO that is a bit too long. It is not always high noon on the reef. I run mine for 7.5 hours, and then the 03's for 2.5 hours before and after they are...

    Clicking Sound. Whats Up?

Well, I actually saw what I thought was "smoke" coming from one of my live rocks. This is when I first saw him scurry from one hole to another, lightening fast. Then I just waited him out. I finally saw those two eyes poking out of the rock. He was certainly awesomely beautiful. The "smoke" as...

    Clicking Sound. Whats Up?

Congradulatons on your mantis shrimp. :D Hermit P.S. When was the last time you added LR? When did the sounds begin? FYI, I had a mantis that came in on a huge piece of LR, and he didn't start clicking for about 3 weeks after I got the rock. This is the key: when did you last add any rock to...

    coralline alage???

Alkalinity!! Studies are showing that alkalinity seems to actually be more important than calcium for good growth. But rest assured you need good high readings of both for success. Also, I had a coralline explosion after I started adding Kent's Pro Buffer dkh, in addition to dripping Kalk every...

    lighting for torch coral?

From Julian Sprung---- Moderate to high lighting needs---these species rely heavily upon their zooxanthellae for survival. Extremely agressive---will sting nearby corals Medium-strong current. I have never kept one, I passed on a gorgeous one a week ago. I passed him up because of the...

    Mantis shrimp color change...

You probably had an immature peacock, that is now getting his adult colors. I had a peacock, and he was gorgeous. Watch for signs of red and blue to show as well. Here's a site you should enjoy, that will educate and inform: http://blueboard.com/mantis HTH Hermit [ November 15, 2001: Message...

How often should you clean substrate?

Go to any on-line vendor (starting here of course ;) ) and check out the "Clean Up Crew Packages". This will give you an idea of what is considered to be the standard in the hobby for clean up crews. BTW, I stand by my advice NOT to vacuum the substrate if you have a DSB. Many of the minions...

    Algae Blenny

Well I have had sort of the same experience. I have since learned that there are many species of blennies. The most friendly is the "Lawnmower", the cute one that leaves those Marilyn Monroe lip prints all over your glass. Most others are not so friendly. When I lost my lawnmower (siphon hose...

How often should you clean substrate?

If you have a fine aragonite substrate, the answer to your question is NEVER. Get the proper clean-up crews and they will turn the substrate for you, you should never have to "vaccuum" it. In fact it is detrimental to the bed. HTH Hermit BTW-- Crushed Coral is a different subject altogether.

    watts per gallon.

Well said Sonny. Actually the WPG rule basically came about during the days when most Saltwater tanks consisted of fish only and a few hearty inverts. It is absolutely worthless for reefs. When considering lighting for reefs, and by reefs I mean mostly corals if not all corals, one takes into...

    Are these sponges ?

Yes, some of mine are about 3" across, and now have several tubes growing out of the mass instead of just the one they started with. These are feeder tubes. I suspect as the mass grows it needs to provide itself with more nourishment. My theory of course ;) I love to study them under my...

    New Choices for snails

You must have a DSB to maintain Nassarius, this is a must as they are sand creatures basically. If you have a DSB I HIGHLY recommend these guys. Margarita are almost worthless. Ans STAY AWAY from the "cute" little Bumble Bee snails! They are indeed predators. Get a couple of Fighting Conchs...

    hammer coral

I agree with Jacksonpt, this is not a board for the overly sensitive type. It is a place we offer advice and opinions for those who are geniunely interested in the well-being of the creatures we love. Granted, some are more diplomatic than others, but this is not a personality contest. Be glad...
