I so totally agree H2O. That's one of the reasons I SOLD all my Smartlites and upgraded to VHO. All sold but one, and I use that one I have left as a dawn/dusk light rather than have it just take up room in my basement fish supply store. :rolleyes: And at $32.00 a crack, they ain't cheap! Hermit

Of course, metal halides. But with only an 18" depth, my choice would be VHO to avoid a heat issue. I have a 40 with a 10-11" depth and went with VHO. I love it. However, I will concede that I don't (and won't) keep clams. My choices otherwise are almost unlimited. But again, I buy only farm...

IMHO, no. I have a 40 with 380 watts VHO, and I won't consider these creatures. They require high intensity lighting which only metal halides can provide to satiate their needs. Oh I know some one will say they keep them "alive" with less. But for these creatures to "thrive" they need much more...

COOP, I'm not sure about the sexual question( :eek: lol) but I do have Halmedia. It is always very pale to almost whiteish before lights on in the a.m. Then quickly greens up as soon as it gets light. From what I have read this is absolutely normal for this species of algae. HTH Hermit

Firstly, if you do a change over, do it very slowly to avoid a "re-cycle". It can be done with patience. I did this to a 6 year old 125 gallon tank that had CC. I did it in thirds, waiting a week inbetween (taking out 1/3, replace with dry sand, wait a week, do another 1/3, etc.). Retail dry...

Well I have had mine for almost a year now, and I am completely satisfied with this skimmer. For my size tank it is a workaholic. IMHO I would not recommend it for over a 55 gallon tank. But for smaller tanks it is a great little skimmer, once "tweaked", as above posts have advised. Now mine...

I brought home a nice Toadstool Leather yesterday. Sometime during the night he fell (wasn't attatched properly :mad: ) and one side of him landed smack into my Pagoda Cup Coral. Pagoda is fine, no damage at all. Acted normal all day. My ? is this: the toadstool has a white patch on him now...

Yeah, that's what I was told. I got the "new" ballast 3 months ago. But when I went to order the dimmer I was told that if my ballast doesn't say "dimmable" on it, you MUST send it in. :mad: HTH Hermit
