Two Questions - Painted Background - Canopy

    1. Okay, I am going to redo the canopy on a 55 that I bought. I am going to have 4, 4' VHO's in the canopy. The lights will be approximately 10" above the water is this too high for VHO's? I am thinking that using this high of a canopy I could step up to MH in the future without redoing the...

    Shopping List Question

Thanks, the lighting will be 4 - 4ft. VHO's., 440 watts I had a jawfish in my 65 Gallon, which was taller and wider but only 36" instead of 48". I think the jawfish would be okay? I had the 65 about 5 years ago now and I am just now starting to get back into it.

    Drilling - Using Rotozip?

dcathey - That is exactly why I drilled the tank, one for a drain/overflow and one for return. This way you don't have to mess with an overflow and you don't have to worry about losing suction and overflowing the main tank. This tank was completely empty on its side on my back deck when I...

    Electrical question

I might just run a dedicated line of 12-3 coneected to a 20 amp breaker for an outlet under the stairs in my basement! Luckily, it is in the utility area and I just need to run it along the rafters and down to the conduit and outlet box. I have space in my electrical box, how hard is it to...

    Cracked Tank

Ah man, that really sucks! Did you flinch when your macaw screeched and that caused the glass to break? I also think you should just get a new tank, a new tank is a lot easier to stomach than water all over the floor, dead fish, and dying live rock and sand. Sorry to hear about that.

    Drilling - Using Rotozip?

No worries Moby I didn't get electrocuted and I didn't crack my tank! I slung the cord over my back to keep it up and out of the water. Also, never drill your tank while barefooted, shoes help insulate you in case of short circuit! I got two holes in the back for my bulkheads. I took...

    Drilling - Using Rotozip?

Thanks, I thought it would work! I will probably run the hose on a low trickle to keep the area wet. Thanks again!

    Drilling - Using Rotozip?

Has anyone drilled a tank using a rotozip tool. They accept the same bits as a dremel. All of the threads I have seen state that a dremel was used. I was just curious whether a rotozip would work or not. It is high rpm, so that might be a factor.

    Quickrete play sand

Kolorscape play sand sold by Walmart, Home Depot, and Meijer is a calcium based play sand made by Old Castle. It has a blue label on the bag. I found it at a Meijer store. It costs about 3.32 a bag. I have heard of people using regular Old Castle sand with an orange label that says all natural...

    A Few Questions - RO/DI - Bulkheads

Why is a 3/4" return used instead of another 1"? Does the smaller diameter help the pump with head pressure?

    A Few Questions - RO/DI - Bulkheads

Clarifying Question 2 - I was talking about the sump overflowing due to power outage when you use a bulkhead. My guess is that, the bulkhead uses gravity not suction so you need space in the sump to absorb the extra water volume draining from the main tank and not being pumped back up.

    Shopping List Question

I am getting a 55 and I will have a protein skimmer, a 20 gallon sump/refugium, 3-4" Sandbed, and 55+lbs of live rock. After the tank has cycled I want to add a par of perculas, a Jawfish, Royal Gramma, and a Flame Angel. I know these fish are compatible but would this amount of fish overload...

Alright, got it, it comes with pump so that is good. I will just setup it up like you have running out of sump and back in.

    UV Question

Also, I never had a UV in my other Aquarium but the one I am buying off of someone here has one. How is this setup? Does it just connect inline with the hose going to refugium?

    A Few Questions - RO/DI - Bulkheads

    1. I am going to be drilling my tank, a 55g, and wonder what size of bulkhead that will work the best. 2. Also, I used an overflow box on my last Aquarium and I know how to drill the hole to break the suction in case of a power outage is there anything that you can do to reduce the chance of...

Another Cleaner Shimp Dead???? Whats Going On

I would at the least just get a cheapo thremometer to double check the water temp. This might be a dumb question but is it plugged in? It is doubtful that two heaters would malfunction right after another. Do you have a chiller, is this setting screwed up. Just brainstorming for you!
