    new reef

Their making money, I recommend kent turbo calcium and Kalkwasser for calcium maintenance and Aragamilk or Seachem Reef Builder for alkalinity buffering. Two or three products are all that is necessary. You tank is shy of enough LS, you need like 120lbs in your tank and the canister should have...

    HELP! Slug-like creatures taking over!

That sounds like a flatworm infestation, very bad. The best bet is probably a whole tank freshwater dip. BurnNSpy

    Clicking Sound. Whats Up?

That resembles the sound of a pistol shrimp. The bigger it gets the louder. Pray for a pistol as it is harmless as far as I can tell. BurnNSpy

    Slugs in the tank

I have 2 sea slugs in my reef. They look identacle to my snails from the bottom, in place of the shell is a small plate. Slugs like are usually harmless. I recommend keeping an eye out to see what it eats to be sure. BurnNSpy

    Fiji Green Alcyonium Leather

Moderate water motion, moderate lighting and Phtyoplankton unless the tank is heavily fed for fish. Very easy to keep it only requires quality water and light. BurnNSpy

    Mark Weiss Blackpowder

It's really hard to say. I know my brittle star likes it and I believe my Blastomussa Merliti's liked it too. It is really difficult to prove or disprove what an additive can do without a proper test setup to eliminate product interference. I do know my reef looks good, so its is definitely...

    Watts per gallon is wrong

I wouldnt use a LFS as a guide to reef keeping. They are typically reef ignorant. If you wants to see spectacular corals check out a coral farm. Guess what lights they use to raise the most colorful corals and clams? BurnNSpy

Do Metal Halides need separate Actinic bulbs?

Um, actually you can safely use 175watt bulb with 250watt ballast but not viceversa. I run 175watt 12000K MH in my 29gal reef and know for a fact it is actinic enough for most corals. About 2 months ago my Acropora started to bleach, I replaced the bulb and the color returned. I did reduce the...

How often should you clean substrate?

Sorry dude, you don't have a cleanup crew there. A cleanup crew consist of snails, hermits(scarlets are prefered) and brittle stars. Emeralds eat algae but it will hardly impact the algae population, but they are nice to watch. BurnNSpy

How often should you clean substrate?

Vacuuming a sand bed is not detrimental if done 1" deep, every week. Having a brittle star and some scarlet hermits helps too. Mechanical usually = nitrate factories BurnNSpy

http links for DSB comparison studies?

Keep in mind that there are more things to consider when comparing CC to LS(typically aragonite), CC doesnt have the same buffering capacity. Because of its grain size CC should be vacuumed to prevent nitrate buildup. Other then its lack of buffering and recommended maintenance CC is a good...

Corals and sensitivity to salinity changes

I recommend waiting until you can setup the larger tank with a 20gal tank you have much more to worry about then salinity. They are unstable due to water volume and recommended for experienced reef keepers. BurnNSpy

    Lighting and coral choices

Actually MH lighting coming in different K ratings also exhibit different colors. Flo bulbs cannot reproduce the light shimmer of the MH bulb or the sun. I prefer the natural appearence that the shimmer lends to a reef with MH bulbs. BurnNSpy

    TOO MUCH LIGHT

It is impossible to have too much flo lighting due to physical dimensions. It is possible to have too much MH lighting boiling the tank, but that is the only side effect along with a massive electric bill. BurnNSpy

SurfinSam, A DSB or plenum system does conver ammonia and Nitrtie since the first 1" of gravel is aerobic and contains aerobic bacteria just like a bioball setup. The plenum contains a low oxygen gradient, this cannot be mistaken for a DBS oxygen free zone. There is usually no measurable...
