choices in purchase of live rock

when purchasing live rock for a tank that has none, is it better to split the amount of rock between "coralline" and "primo" or go for broke and get all "primo". I realize some will be more hidden, etc, but we may not purchase again and we're not sure if we are being cheap by mixing. Thanks for...

    35g fowlr

we are new to saltwater fish keeping, so have had nothing but damsels due to their inexpensive nature, however, they are going back to the lfs one by one since they are so aggressive towards each other. As soon as one goes, the next one in line takes over the "alpha" role. Pretty soon there will...

    Octopus

I just saw octopi at both the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and the Aquarium at the Mall of America in Mnpls within the last two weeks, they both had their tanks upper edges lined with astro turf--there is something about astroturf that they have trouble getting a hold of to get out. both were big...

    Domino Damsel

we had one that had to go back to the lfs, he was chewing up the fins and tail of one of our other damsels. good luck if you choose this fish. Also, the color fades to more of a grey as they mature.

    Southdown sand in Milwaukee, WI

I called two Home Depots in Milwaukee, both said their play sand is just labeled "play sand" and one guy said he thought it was high silicate sand. Guess it would be worth a stop if you are here for some other reason. The guy said all Milw area stores use the same distributor, you would do...

    Damsel acting odd...

We only have damsels and they each have created a similar space for sleeping--the blue damsel has the deepest spot under some dead coral. We also have a yellow tail and a velvet--they usually stay behind or under some other rocks. This is where they go every night after lights out.

    Live Rock

technically, any rock that requires shipment will arrive "uncured" due to die off in transit, so that any shipped rock, even if shipped in water, should be "cured" once you recieve it, that is, put in a container or tank to go through a period of time (curing) to deal with the ammonia spike due...

How do you catch a damsel?!

in my short fishy experience, I think the best way is to put in a domino damsel who will terrorize all the others to death, then you only have one to catch instead of however many you have now. j/k good luck

    thinking about ordering LR

on this subject, if you set up a small tank or rubbermaid or whatever to cure new live rock, what all would you need in that container? water, (duh) a heater, these things I can figure out, but would you also need a filter? some of the other stuff like a skimmer? powerhead? live rock seems so...

question re: brown algae in new tank

this tank isnt really mine, its my daughter's, but i'm looking over her shoulder all the time to support/advise/etc. so the question is, her tank is two months old and has finally "cycled" (whew) but now there is brown crud over the glass and sand. No live rock, just some regular rocks and 4...
