Peppermint Shrimp Death In The Family

I would pretty much bet money on your CBS. They are evil little buggers IMO...lol. Really though, I had, keyword HAD-a CBS until I finally saw him in the act and ate my 3rd Skunk. Needless to say he is no longer a member of my reef and I will never again keep a CBS with other shrimp...

    Xm Bulb Owners!

I run two 250 SE 10K XM's off IC ballasts. I love them and could not be more pleased with these bulbs. I personally wouldn't run them alone, but with my VHO actinics the aesthetics of the tank is perfect IMO. I am extremely pleased with the coloration in my corals, and my growth rates are...

    Neddlewheel Mod?

The needle wheel mod, I've also seen it called the mesh mod. Taking off the actual needle wheel of the prop and putting gutter guard or enkamat in place of it. Basically you get more air in your water, slower flow for greater contact time, and some really nasty skimmate.

    mogul or HQI

Every test I've run off Sanjay's lighting site(reeflightinginfo) shows the exact opposite. DE's put out a slight bit more when the UV sheild is not taken into account, but once you put the UV sheild on you recieve less light than SE bulbs.

    Neddlewheel Mod?

Has anyone modified a needlewheel? Did you use gutterguard, enkamat, or something else? How are the results?

    Skimmer Break-In Period

It shouldn't take a couple of weeks for a skimmer to break in. The only reason brand new skimmers don't skim right away is due to oil left over from the manufactoring process. No different when you stick you hand in your tank water and then the head on foam falls right away. I just bought a...

    Kalk drip question

Kalk should not be exposed to open air as much as possible. As long as you have a decent seal on it will be fine. I make 5 gallons at a time and drip through my kalk reservoir, which has a lid. RHF on the big board makes 90g of Kalk water at a time. He makes his in a large garbage can with a...

    Kalkwasser through an auto top-off?

I'm not familiar with the set up of the Tunze ATO, but I always(24/7) drip kalk through my gravity fed ATO. Mine has no powerhead or switches though, just a simple float valve.

    Plumbing to the skimmer

Most recircualting skimmers are direct fed. They don't have to be, and instead some people feed them with a small MJ. Recircualting skimmers work most effectively at low turnover rates 2X-3X, and by directly gravity feeding the skimmer at the base/under water, it slows the flow down a bit...

    Type of Skimmer?

If you are looking for an in sump skimmer, I would definitely buy an Octopus skimmer. You will not beat it for the price and it will skim circles around any coralife model. I paid $180 for mine the (NW-200 on sale now, Google: OctopusSkimmer or ASMSkimmer) and it has an 8' diameter and is 24'...

Plans for a DIY top off

Here is a picture of mine. It's 15 gallons total when I use the two buckets, but usually I just use the 5g acrylic resivor with float valve. No relays, switches, or anything else to worry about. It is simply a gravity feed Kalk ATO. Drips at the exact rate water is evaporated, it does not...

    skimmer?

I'd look into Octopus skimmers. From the threads I've read on the other board you can't even compare Octopus to ASM. These skimmers draw more air, are made of cell cast acrylic-not extruded acrylic, and are much cheaper. I just purchased the NW-200 for only $178. It's 24 inches tall and has...
