Sounds a little overly cautious to me, until I see you are running a 30G??? With an aquarium of that size I would definetly make ANY changes as gradual as possible. Don't forget though, SG rises with evaporation. How often are you topping off? Make sure you use fresh water to top off, just a...

my .02 on plexiglass. I cut some acrylic to use as a topper for my sump to help with evaporation and within 2 days it was all bowed out. Make sure you get a decent thickness if you go with acrylic.

MAVGI, Awesome pics, thank you. What is the thickness of your baffles? The glass I have found is normally used for picture frames and is only 2.5mm thick. Is the fan above your sump used for cooling? Is it effective? How do you like your skimmer?
