How many people use one way valves.

Great diagram Broomer, thank you. I know everyone appreciates you taking the time and effort to make up such a nice drawing. It really helps when you are trying out the plumbing thing for the first time, even with simple stuff. Scott: Yes. I plumbed the swing check valve in a vertical run of...

    Emperor 400 needeed for sump?

Jumpfrog is correct. Probably the most significant benefit to having a sump (aside from getting ugly equipment out of the main tank) is adding more water to the system. A larger body of water is more stable, always better for the tank inhabitants. It takes longer for pollutants to build up...

Yeah Kipass, My set up is basically like yours except I feed my fuge with a tee off of the overflow line instead of the return line. I wanted the 'dirty' water to get to my fuge. And my fuge does also gravity feed to the sump via two bulkheads. Great minds think alike. -Christine :)

    Emperor 400 needeed for sump?

Most people here go with a deep sand bed (4-6"), live rock (~1 lb/g) and a good skimmer as their sources of filtration. Your sump can house the mechanical things, skimmer, heater, maybe baffles to reduce bubbles going back to tank, return pump. The sand bed and live rock in your main tank will...

How many people use one way valves.

I plumbed in a simple pvc swing check valve from McMaster-Carr (~ $10) into to the return line, just after my pump. I have anti-siphon holes in my return lines that perform when the power is shut off, but this is in place as a redundancy. It also alows me to run the sump with a bit more water...

You must be close to the border to come here for a game! Thunder Bay? The lfs around here are expensive. I bought stuff there (on sale thank goodness!), but found considerably better prices on the internet (even with shipping). Try this site and E-bay. I have others bookmarked and can...

    Dumb Choice Part Two

I agree with Broncofish and Aggie. I doubt that you can force feed or train feed a fish. These fish are known to live for several months as they slowly starve to death. How will you know if it is nourshed, even if it does 'eat' for you? IMO, both the Crab and the Mandarin need roaming space...

    PVC plumbing question!

I belive that some threads should still be showing. If no threads are showing, my guess is that you over-tightened. If over-tightened, you must throw away that piece and replace it. I worked in a manufacturing facility and worked with alot of stainless steel and plastic threaded pipe fittings...

You need an external overflow box and a return pump (and all of the plumbing in between). The plumbing will be the most challenging part, but it is fun and interesting too. I use Marineland SOS overflows and like them. I hear Lifereef makes good ones too. I have heard mixed reviews on the CPR...

    another sump question.

I have something like that on my 125g. Two SOS overflows to a 20 gallon tall glass aquarium sump (with skimmer and DIY baffles). I have a Dolphin DP 900 submersed in the last section of the sump as a return pump. I plumbed with flex pvc and installed a swing check valve and ball valve (in...

plumbing from overflow to sump help

Keep the whole line in flex pvc or vinyl tubing. You can move it around that way to find the position that will create the least amount of noise for you. Then just leave it in that position or cable tie/ zip tie it there. Most people have to shift their discharge tubing around to find a...
