    How to screen powerheads.

My experience has been with the Blue Velvet Nudibranch. I have lost two or three of them till I switched to a closed loop and added a large sponge to the overflow of my 60 cube. You say the plan is to keep a pink/green cucumber. I could be wrong but, what I read makes me think that their ability...

Small ammount of hair algae and bubble algae, should I just learn to like it?

The bubble algae is a macroalgae and not a sign of bad water quality. As long as you harvest the bubble algae out so it doesn't overgrow the corals, it is good to keep the water quality pristine and it will out complete the hair algae and keep it in check as well. If you pluck the bubbles while...

Does white spot linger in DT after fish removed?

You are welcome, any thing I can do to help... I just went through this process my self. I pulled my one fish from the DT and in three weeks he looked cured of Ich. It did take all my patience to keep him out of the DT for the rest of 10 weeks. Yet, I was able to do it and all is clear as of now.

    How to screen powerheads.

The suction from the power-heads can trap and kill delicate weak swimmer/crawlers. The large powerful pumps need more then 2 inches of foam. A closed loop will work for all types of animals if the intake is in a sump and the overflows are covered with thick foam.

Does white spot linger in DT after fish removed?

If the white spot was Cryptocaryon irritans Then you would want to run the DT fallow with no fish to kill off the pest. The average life cycle of Cryptocaryon irritans is 3 weeks. 3 weeks will give you a 68% chance that you have eradicated the parasite. Leaving a tank fallow for 6 weeks will...

    base rock/live rock

Not a good idea... There are to many unknown possible contaminants that are commonly used in yard and lawn care. Or the unknown mineral content of the rocks themselves.

Led build help. Calling all led experts.

I would leave room for two fans in your design. When I did a little one foot c channel heat sink with three Cree leds it warmed up a lot. When dimmed to 50% there was no need for the fan, but because I had not decide what to dim the leds too I add a few fans.

    Algae in QT tank

I setup my extra 10g hex as a QT.  I am quarantining a bangai cardinal when i noticed there was algae in the tank?!  Is this normal?  Do I need a small cleanup crew?  I feed the cardinal brine shrimp but i siphon out all the uneaten food.  I figured there would be no problem with algae.  There...

Making your own synthetic reef salt?

Once upon a time, there was only ocean water filled Barrels. If you lived in a land locked state there was no way to keep a saltwater tank. Then came the idea of mixing your own salt and at first it was horrible. Most people that tried killed their tanks. Resolving the salt-mix dilemma has...

    Purpose of sodium carbonate?

Thank you for explaining that in more detail Guy. I appreciate it. So, it really doesn't matter if your mix the two or not for a neutral pH swing - it's temporary. You just have to know if your pH is low or high... then if you know that, you know which alkalinity additive to use. So you can see...

    Purpose of sodium carbonate?

I use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to increase alkalinity occasionally. But what about sodium carbonate? What does it do in a reef? Is it a pH upper or downer? Is there any benefit of blending the two? Anyone? I can buy sodium carbonate at a local pool cleaning store for cheap. Most bake...
