    My 1st Reef Tank

The left side of my tank features a piece of tonga branch that my wife thinks looks like someone bending over. The rest of my live rock is Fiji rock. I picked out a couple of pieces with some really nice coraline growth that so far is sticking.

    My 1st Reef Tank

Our first corals were these mushrooms. I haven't got moonlights yet but can't wait to see how the strips look when I do.

    My 1st Reef Tank

We added a pair of clowns for my daughters birthday. This is Jill. Jack met an unfortunate end at the hands of a powerhead .

    My 1st Reef Tank

I've got approximately 80 lbs of LR in there with a few pieces of dead rock added for the nifty shapes.

    My 1st Reef Tank

After the water cleared I played around with the aqua scaping and this is about where we ended up. It's an 85 gallon tank.

    My 1st Reef Tank

This is my first attempt at keeping a Saltwater Tank. I've been thinking about it for years but my daughters facination was the final inspiration to make this real. She was really excited by the rocks in cloudy water.

    Water Change Process

I'm probably making this process more difficult than needed and I'd appreciate any idea's to make this process easier. My tank doesn't have a sump yet so I'm starting off with a harder process to begin with but here goes. 1. The day before a water change I mix up my saltwater in an old 30 tall...

    Fastest Nitrate Kit

The directions say to put the packet in shake for 1 minute and wait for exactly 3 minutes to view results. Can anyone tell me if that is a total of 3 minutes or 4 minutes from the time you put the packet in. It hasn't mattered much to this point since my results at both points have always been...

ever get a fish caught in the pwr head

Does anyone sell premade sponges for powerheads? I lost a clown to an aquaclear 70. I put a couple of aquaclear quick filters on them to prevent it from happening again but they are so large... I'd rather use a sponge but don't want it to look cheesy and homemade.

    Michigan role call...

The staff at Preuss is top notch. For years in college I kept fresh water fish and they were alot of help and always had quality LS.

    Replacing a Clown

I had 2 small Percula Clowns for about a week. One of which got sucked into a powerhead intake. I've rectified that situation by putting Aquaclear filter attachments on the powerheads. Can I replace the clown? Will the existing clown accept it?

    Michigan role call...

The staff at Moby [hr] is very helpful and I got some great live rock from them. Went out to Kee's this week and they had alot of good corals, Atlantis has a pretty good selection of corals for a small shop, I didn't care for the fish guy (big store not much stock) and I can't wait for the...

    Power Head Placement

The new powerhead is all hidden behind the live rock. I'm not setup with a sump yet so I don't have much choice on the heater and skimmer being in view. The other 2 powerheads are pretty much where I gather most people have them in the top corners. The one I lowered slightly on the right is...

    Power Head Placement

I added a third powerhead today and repositioned the existing 2 and it made a huge difference. The oily film on the water surface is now gone and the protein skimmer seems to be collecting more. The original 2 are still in an x but I lowered the one on the right side and directed it more...

    Power Head Placement

I have an 85 gallon tank with 2 Aqua Clear 70 power heads. LFS recommended that I place them in the rear corners hanging from the top pointed accross the tank like an X. I have about 90 pounds of live rock and plan on a fish and reef tank. Is this enough water flow and should I change the...

    Water Flow And Feeding

I have an 85 gallon tank with 2 Aquaclear 70 powerheads. Yesterday I added some green chromis which are my first fish. When I fed them this morning before they even noticed the food the powerheads blew it all over the tank. Should I be turning off the power heads during feeding. It's a pretty...

Could it be possible my tank has cycled in 7 days?

OK so maybe I was a little to zealous. 1 pep shrimp turned up dead today. Haven't seen the other 2. Snails are doing a nice job on the LR and the crabs seem to be chowing on the CC. Are pepermint shrimp generally pretty fragile? Numbers still good this morning but I'm going to take water to...

Could it be possible my tank has cycled in 7 days?

Well 72 hours in the shrimp came out. Tested water. Salinity 1.024. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, pH 8.4. I've got quite a bit of brown and green algae so I added the cleaning crew today. Started with 12 astea snails, 12 hermits (adding to my one hitchhiker), and 3 peppermint shrimps...

Could it be possible my tank has cycled in 7 days?

48 hours after dropping in the shrimp. Tested water. Salinity 1.024. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, pH 8.2-8.4. Water temp is 78. The Nitrate test may have had the slightest bit of color but not much. I'm using the FasTest kits. Does anyone think I can add the cleaning crew if the levels are...

Could it be possible my tank has cycled in 7 days?

Ammonia is still 0. I'm starting to see brown algae on the CC, live rock, heater and glass.
