    Hello there

I'm getting older and slower; but what is in the sump that is action as a bio-filter? Rinse carbon as often as you like; but there is no reason to do it so often. This addiction is enough work without creating more; but lots of times, just messing with our "stuff" is more fun than work.

Carbon question and Raw shrimp for cycle question

I've used Chemi-Pure for many years and love it. One 10oz bag should last at least 6 months or so in a tank your size. Chemi-Pure Elite just adds ferric hydroxide to the Chemi-Pure. This stuff removes phosphate & silicate and is usually exhausted after just a few weeks. The Elite is more...

    Hello there

I'm not really sure of your bio-filter situation. If you are using a mechanical (floss, sponge, etc) filter as the main culturing spot for your bio-filter until you get more LR; you're cleaning them too often. Remember: the friendly bacteria live in the LR (limited in your case) and the filter...

    Just Snatched Red Fin WaspFish.

I noticed that this fish didn't last long. I was trying to figure out how to accommodate him...then you got him. Saved me a lot or juggling & moving, good luck with him.

    Expert Dawf Angel Keepers Requested

I believe AquaKnight is correct; Centropyge genus angels do not require a lot of sponge. The fact that a few Angels do rely on sponge has somehow led to the mis-conception that they all do. Frozen angel foods that contain sponge are fine for them, though. Another common myth about this group of...

    Very interesting.

Yeah, one our hobby's biggest misconceptions is that the friendly bacteria live in the water column; they don't. Several folks have tried to instantly cycle a 2nd tank with water from another tank---won't work. There is probably more bacteria in a teaspoon of substrate, a bit of gunk growing and...

first fill - non RO water

Me too, 30+ years. It all depends on your source water, IME&IMO. Your local water must give you a water quality report; use it and test for everything you can. As to an initial fill, assuming the tap would be replaced in time, it shouldn't be a big deal---unless you had real water quality...

    fish fight!

These are both aggressive fish and need to establish a pecking order---or they simply may not tolerate each other. How big is the tank? The bigger the tank, the better your chances. Also, groupers are very fast growers, triggers are not. While most "gulpers", like groupers, usually don't try to...

    heaters

True; and it won't be long before the "Green Police" make us keep our tanks under 50 degrees and confiscate our MH lighting. Corkscrew florescent bulbs only. But, hey, the new LED technology may have a good fixture under $1000 soon!

Please help me now, leaking tank.

I hate to say it; but these problems seldom have easy solutions and a small leak can turn major in no time. Most leaks will be somewhere in a seam of the bottom glass panel and I don't believe there is a way to patch them from the outside---lots of outward pressure from all the water inside...

    Diatom Algea

Yeah, and diatoms in a mature tank are almost always a result of silicates. Easily tested for and easily removed.

    heaters

IMO&IME, the biggest potential for trouble is a sticking thermostat and then way over-heating. On larger tanks, I like to use 2 heaters, each about 1/2 the needed wattage. If one has trouble, it will give you plenty of time to catch it. Also, the thermometers with the high/low temp alarms are...

    Filter Size

I change Chemi-Pure every 4-6 months; depending on the tank. I think this is the mfg's recommendation; and they tend to want to have you change more than necessary. I've used tis stuff for many years and have no reason to think this isn't often enough. But, I have large tanks, there are so many...

    star attraction

I'm not the expert; but a full grown fuzzy can scarf a Ocellaris (thanks for not calling them false percs) and the cardinal fish with no problem. A Scotts Fairy Wrasse (or another of the many fairy wrasse) would be a great addition. IMO, you're not overstocked. Just a comment: IME&IMO, yellow...

    wrasse question

Its amazing how a fish can hide when they want to. Did you check around the tank? These fish (like most wrasse) are very willing & able jumpers.
