Water changes can solve most problems. Dosing can get you in trouble if youre not 100% sure what it's going to do.

I think there are ways to do it that are a lot easier. I think it may be GARF that just does it with hanging bags in a window. As long as you keep using it and refilling the bag with fresh water it keeps growing and won't go stagnent.

Just throw all the rock on a tarp in your trunk. Live stock in 5gallon buckets with lids. Put the tank where you can with the sand still in the bottom. When you set it back up use the water from your 30 gal and make the rest new. If you do this you wont have to worry about the tank cycling again.
