Lets see the tanks running with no skimmers.....

I dont run a skimmer on my tank. I tried one once but it didnt seem to do very much and since then I have become convinced they pull out the very nutrients the corals need. I do have a 30G sump / fuge that is filled pretty full with LR though. Here are some pics of my tank. I recently...

Help: lost 5 chromis in one day!!

What did you clean the rocks with? Seems like something could have happened there. I know you mentioned it was a routine cleaning. Do you use any chemicals for that or just the tank water? Could something have gotten on your brush? Or as you say, maybe the anthias has gone psycho.

whats the best way to help it grow? (coraline)

Additionally, I think you need to have the tank running for a good month or two before you will see it start to grow well. The tank parameters have to be stable.

New 75 gal tank - advice??

    1. LR- Typically you want to have 1 to 1/2 pounds of LR for the tank size. More is better IMO. The LR is the best filtration you can get in the tank. It can be very expensive but the good thing is you do have the option to add it here and there. 2. Fish recommendations. A flame angel is a...

    Light issue????

The kind of light bulb you will be able to get will depend on the fixture you have. Your options are going to be limited. The thing to do is check the wattage output of your fixture. For example if you have a 40W fixture then you want to get a bulb in that range. If you wanted to have more...

    Aliens have invaded my sump!!

Wow! Aliens really have landed in your sump. I have no idea what those are but they do look kinda cool. The one in the last pic looks like a baby octopus. I only say that because it looks like it has a tentacle with the suction cup things on it.

A possibly foolish canister filter question

Ahh, so you havent added corals yet then. Although with the lights you have you could certainly add a pretty wide selection of softies. Yeah, with being FOWLR it would be good to stick with the canister. However, as you gain more experience with the hobby you will likely be like a lot of us...

    How are my numbers?

It could be a tough call. The ammonia level isnt super high but any amount of it is not good for the fish. If you havent observed any abnormal behavior from the fish in the last week you could possibly get away without doing a water change. I would run the ammonia test again just to be sure...

    How are my numbers?

The only thing that looks off to me would be the ammonia. Which was likely caused from moving all of the rock around and stirring up the substrate. It's best to avoid stirring up the substrate if possible. Depending on what you stir up it can cause a mini-cycle to happen. Doing a regular...

    Alkalinity High !!! 14+ dKh !!!

A few things come to mind. The magnesium level is barely low so I dont believe that is the issue. Although it wouldnt hurt to bump it up a bit. Have you done any water changes recently? If so then what was the source of the water you used? RO or tap? Did you recently change water sources at...

A possibly foolish canister filter question

Hello Mac, Not to completely change the subject but after reading your post and the thread there may be another route you may want to go down later. I am guessing if you have 85lbs of LR in your tank that you are set up with a reef. You might look into going with a sump / fuge instead of the...

    Help

Welcome to the boards A 75G would be a good starter tank. Although if you know you are going to be in the hobby for a long time then I would say it is best to get as large as you can afford and have space for. The best equipment you can get will vary upon what you want to do with the tank...

    fuge question?

Here is a list of some different macro algaes you can get. Halameda Caulerpa Chaeto (Most people use this one) You will want to go to your LFS and buy some. Or you could look in the classifieds section in these forums and find someone selling them. These macro algaes previous posters have...

    ideas for 1 fish!!!

Here are my thoughts. I would remove the yellowtail damsel. As you start getting the tank where it is at the stock level he will probably get vey aggressive. Since you have a reef tank is your maroon clownfish hosting in anything? If so then he could get pretty mean as well. A possibility...

    New Camera Pics!!!!!!

I have to agree 100% 05XRunner. A P&S is not going to get anywhere near the quality of a DSLR. Having lots of options with what lense you can use is a great thing as well with the DSLR. I guess my only gripe was that for the amount of $$ I had to spend for the canon xti the stock lense on it...

    New Camera Pics!!!!!!

Great looking pics. It is amazing what a good camera can do. I have the canon xti rebel and I like it. It does have the stock lense and the only part about it I dont like is the zoom capability. I think $100 dollar point and shoots have a better zoom capability. But boy is the autofocus...

    Sargassum in refugium???

At first I had never heard of sargassum. Seemed like if it was a macro algae it would be fine. So I did a search and found this thread. https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/275523/sargassum Check out Reefkprz post. Interesting stuff.

Oceanic 46 Bow Front. What fuge?

I dont have the bowfront tank you are referring to you but I have built a fuge for 2 different setups and here is what I did. Take careful measurements of how much room you have to work with in the stand and then get the biggest fuge you can find that will fit. You do want to give yourself...

My 55gal New Tank (1st timer)

Starting to look pretty good. Keep the pictures coming. Everyone likes pictures. If you should set up a new tank please consider cycling the tank without using fish. Ammonia is extremely toxic to them and burns their gills. And while it is a good thing the fish lived, it is highly likely...
