The front is scratch resistant. When I bought my wifes the guy selling it to us picked one up off of the display in the apple store and took our house key to the screen rubbing back and forth, not one scratch.

I've had a few different "smart phones" treo 650 and blackjack. And with a doubt my wife's iphone is much better. I think a lot of people "hate" Apple just because they think it's the cool things to do. I agree with Tizzo that most of them have probably never held one.
