All the tanks I have cycled I always ran my skimmer. It probly doesnt matter if you run it or not while cycling. I figure by running it Iam getting a jump start on my water quality. Some people will say it slows the cycling period down by running the skimmer. If it does its not noticeable IMO.

If its in its own housing you would have to rig some kind of brackets to hold it in the hood. I would not reccomend that because it may overheat the unit. If you have not purchased one yet I would get the retofit unit. The retrofit unit will screw right into your canopy.

I would just leave him be and just keep an eye on him to make sure nothing is pestering him. HTH

Is the light unit a reto-fit unit or is it in a housing?

You should be fine. I ran a 90gallon with 90# of fiji rock, 5 medium size fish and some corals with no problems. You may want to pick up a canister filter to run carbon and mechanical filtration every once in awhile. HTH

I also have 3 inches of sand in the refugium with about 150 GPH flow which has helped growing the cheato instead of a higher flow rate I was running before.

I run 85 watts on m refugium/sump which is 30 gallon. The refugium part is 10 gallons and I ran the lights 24/7 to get the cheato growing and now I have the light running opposite of the daylights.The cheato is now getting out of control and its pretty much has consumed the 10 gallon section.

I use cheato in my refugium. I put a basaball size amount in and it doubled in size in a week. In that week it brought my nitrates from 20ppm to 5ppm. No the only one that I have right now is the berlin that goes into a sump for sale. Glad to hear the hippo is doing well. I hated to give her up but she didnt fit into my plans.

What type of filtration do you have? If its rated for the larger tank then you will be fine. Do you have live rock? Are you putting sand or CC in the bottom of the new tank? I would use as much of the water as you can from the old system.
