black or white pvc, any difference?

I see a lot of white pvc plumbing set ups. Is that just a coincidence or is there some sort of bacteria that likes white plastic instead of black?

2 main pumps or 1 big one?

Ok to clear things up I have a 140g tank that needs approx 1400gph total. If I have two return pumps that pump 710gph each thats 1420gph. OR I can have one pump that pumps approx 1500gph. The reason I'm considering two pumps is in case one fails, I will at least have one pump that will be...

    Lighting for a FOWLR tank?

I'm planning my next tank and now I'm into the lighting part. The tank I have is a 72" long tank (140gal). I'm thinking of only getting four t5 HO lights. Is that going to be enough for a fowlr? Or do I need more watts by adding more t5's or go MH? thanks

Whats your Water changing set up?

I'm trying to come up with a way to make my water changes as easy as possible. When I used to have my 65g this is what I did: 1) Turned off the main pump power but left powerhead going. 2) Siphoned out the old water into a big rubbermaid tub which always turned out to be heavy, then dumped it...

    Lighting for a 140 FOWLR?

Great thanks for the info guys. Sure saved me a couple of bucks! I think eventually I'll add some softgoods but thats awhiles down the road. I'm thinking since the tank is approx 72" long I could install four 36" t5's. two on one side and two on the other.

    Lighting for a 140 FOWLR?

Going by the general rule of thumb of 3-5w per gallon, I'd need about 420-700w! That sounds like a lot to me. That means I need 8-10 54w T5's? Thats $136-$180 in just t5 lights not to mention the ballasts and reflectors that are needed. Is my math about right?

What should I put on the carpet under the stand in case of leaks?

awesome great tips guys. I might go with the rubber mat deal. I never thought insurance would pay for a fish tank leak. I'll check into our policy. We are putting it in the living room which has carpet on top of a concrete floor, at least I think its concrete. We dont have a crawl space.

What should I put on the carpet under the stand in case of leaks?

I have a 140 gal that I'm going to be putting together real soon and was wondering what I can put underneath the stand in case of leaks. I dont want to ruin the carpet if something does decide to leak. I had a 65g at one time and we just put painters plastic underneath it. It didn't look that...

what's the 1st thing you wish you had known

I'm only a month into it and don't regret too much. I'd definetely say buy used! Everyone is always upgrading to something bigger and better, and sell their stuff for super cheap. Might not be the best in the world, but if you are a "do'er" then it's nothing a little elbow grease can't help...

    Maroon anemone splitting

The lighting doesn't look too bright in the pictures because I set that way on the camera, and it came out darker than I thought because of the low battery. Anyways, I have four 55wat PC lights. I dont remember the type of output they are though. I ran all 4 and it made the anemone kind of...
