That's encouraging. It would be, at most, a year with those fish if it works out. I think my biggest dilemma is deciding whether to man up about maintenance on the 40 or simplify with this plan.

I would love to get an RO/DI but it just isn't in the budget right now. Plus I have a hard time thinking of was to make it work for drinking water also.

How do you get all the floaties and things that settle on the sand and rocks? Does that stuff harm the powerhead?

I do still get a lot of joy from the tank, even though it is dirty right now. I would set it back up once I'm out of school but I'm 80% sure my plan now is to keep to a routine somehow. What are your guys' procedures for making water changes easier?

True I forgot about that 4th option. My wife (who rolls her eyes at this hobby), acutally suggested it. I can do the maintenance at night when I usually have time. Tank maintenance instead of a movie :/
