    Algae vs Lights

I have a question for you re: algae (green hair in particular). I know that algae needs lights & nutrients to grow & my question is: it has been mentioned that one way to kill off algae is to cut back on lighting, i.e., cut back on your total photoperiod or shut off a couple bulbs. In one of the...

White Worm-like things in my Sump!!

Hi everybody ~ I know this question has been addressed before but I can't remember the answer to it. In my sump & on the pumps, too (no where else, it seems) I have noticed these very small, calcareous (correct term?? Anyway, you know what I mean) worm-type critters. Are they beneficial*...

WHAT is it on my substrate?????

Noticed something unusual on the substrate the other day: This may sound real stupid but, it's the best way I know to describe this thing. It's very small (I'd say about the size of a tack) & looks like a squid that's been buried up to it's neck w/only it's tentacles showing. Color is a light...

    Algae Inhibitor??

BurnNSpy~ Probably mentioned it before but, Phospates are 0. Also, am very careful as far as overfeeding goes - I know that can really add to an algae problem. Was also thinking of trying that Black Powder. How do you like it so far? If you do use that, do you need to add anything else? Am also...

Covering your tank - algae reducer??????

It's me again & my on going problem w/the Green Hair (in the tank, that is!!!!) Here's a good one that I read on the Garf.org site. It was a testimonial letter & one of the tips that he gave to help reduce the hair algae was to completely cover your tank (not letting in any light) for a day a...

    Algae Inhibitor??

BurnNSpy - Nitrates 0, Calcium 350 (am working on getting that one higher), Ph 8.2, haven't done an Akalinity test yet. For additives have been using Mark Weiss' Coral Vital & finishing up a bottle of Liquid Gold. Am thinking of changing to some of the SeaChem line, i.e., Reef Complete, Reef...

    Algae Inhibitor??

Another question for you all re: my green hair algae. Bought a couple of phosphate filter pads w/a red/hair algae inhibitor. The stuff is a powder that you put on the pad itself. Thank goodness I'm a label reader cuz this powder contains Erythromycin Thiocyanate. Know that Erythromycin is an...

    Green Hair Algae

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a Foxface & 2 Tangs. They will pick at some algae on the glass but don't really get into the stuff on the rock. Maybe I have 2 spoiled brats! Don't have any sally lightfoots - may consider a few of those, too. Don't know to much about them. Are they reef safe?

    Live Rock Questions

Steve, If you do not cure the 'dry' rock & just go ahead & put into your tank are you setting yourself up for some problems?? Don't know a whole lot about curing or, the finer points of LR, as I said. Would just like to be able to find some good quality w/o to much hassle before putting it into...

    Live Rock Questions

Was just reading the post "Disappointing Live Rock" & had a couple of related questions. Is any one type of LR better than another or, is it just a matter of preference? If it does arrive 'dry', do you have to take any precautions or do anything special before adding to the tank? Thanks (: P.S...

    Dang Coral Banded

I have 2 Coral Banded Shrimp & they are great tankmates to all - keep to themselves & don't pick on anybody. Must admit, tho - had one & then decided to get another. The 'original' stalked the daylights outta the newcomer & whacked off both claws )= )= & I thought, "This is surely it."...

GREEN Hair in my tank - OHHHHHH NO!!!!

WrasseFan - would you tell me where you got your water purifier online - $28 - that's great! Use a phosphate sponge only for the recommended time & then take it out - seems to be doing the trick as far as the phosphate level goes but, it's ongoing. The purifier probably would help. Feel...
