So after researching (enough I thought..ugh) about these guys I went ahead and got one. From what I understood they were considered "reef safe" as in they wouldn't harm corals, but couldn't be trusted with other inverts/fish. That was fine with me as I intended this to be "his" tank...

Nature's miracle works great. Get the red jug, not the spray bottle and literally saturate the area of carpet so that it penetrates the pad too then let it air dry. It may take a few days to completely dry but when the carpet is fully dried out the odor will be gone for good.
