I don't know if this pertains to birdnests but I have seen corals freshly fragged look like they're going to die and then really recover. I know this doesn't help too much.

I'm confused. You said the 30g tank never had meds in it then you said it did have meds in it. In any case, what kind of meds were in it? The main thing you are looking out for is copper. That's the killer ingredient here.

I wouldn't mess with it. I'm sure its there to support the top of your tank. You wouldnt want water gushing out of your tank now would you? Seriously, a lot of tanks are designed with that brace for a reason.
