Water quality issues - need help!

Well, my friend tested the ph and got 8.2 and nitrate was zero! He is pretty confident his kit is accurate. I feel better and it was good for me to have this little scare because I read a lot about water parameters and this will be a good starting point for getting ready to reef.Obviously, I...

Water quality issues - need help!

Good point about going thru the RO/DI fiters quickly. We already use a floss type filter and it gets filled with sediment fairly quickly. I will look for the Glacier water, thanks! I have a friend coming over soon to test my water with his tests. Will let you know what we find out.

Water quality issues - need help!

The filtration is a wet/dry filter with bioballs that is built into the tank. One powerhead at each end of the tank,Rio 1700 and not sure about the other one's size. Don't have a Ca test kit. My only choices for test kits in this town are Red Sea, Fastest, and Tetra.I can take a water sample to...

Water quality issues - need help!

The ph in my newly mixed saltwater is only 8.0. Ph in my tank was around 7.8. Lfs confirmed this(with same brand of kit-Tetra) and recommended calcium. Added this yesterday A.M. and it went up to 8.0. It is now back to around 7.8. Nitrates are 15. Using well water.Nitrates are now detectable in...

    ditch the fluval?

It is my understanding that if one has a deep sand bed and 1 lb per gallon or more of liverock, then no additional filtration is needed. I received a 55gal with a fluval 303 for my birthday and would like to start a reef tank ( that is if I can solve my water quality issues with the present...

    Water quality questions

Oh, I should have mentioned that I have well water. It is a 110 foot well...not sure where nitrates or bacteria would come from. Should have paid more attention in chemistry class. Thanks matti!

    Silica Based play sand

I saw Quickrete Playsand at Toys R us and almost bought it 'till I read the label, "This product contains substances known to the state of California to cause cancer" or something to that effect. What's that all about?

    Liverock from SWF.com

Will be ordering rock soon and just wondering if the rock from this site will be suitable for cycling a tank or is it already cured? Also, are there a lot of hitchhikers on it? The only experience I have had with live rock was some that I bought from an aquaintance. It had a mushroom...

    creature I.D.

I used live rock to cycle my QT tank several months ago and there have been these critters on the glass for 3 months. They started out as zeppelin shaped whitish clear "tubes" with "eyelash" ends like a tube worm. The largest ones are about 8 mm. long and the smallest are 3mm. They are now all...

    biological filtration

I was wondering if I could use live sand and live rock as the only means of filtration in a 55 gallon. If so, how much of each would I need ? I have read some posts about the play sand, but I'm not sure if it can be "seeded" by live rock or if one needs to get a certain amount of live sand to...

    lighting

I received a new 55 gal. tank as a b-day gift. It has a hood that takes a single 48 in. bulb. I saw a 50/50 bulb in the LFS. Would this be o.k. for a reef tank or should I go with a home made plexiglass top and more lights? I plan to start with liverock and may get an anenome or corals in the...

    rocks

I am setting up my first saltwater tank. Is it necessary to use the live rock? I have some rocks gathered from the beach that I was planning to use (after boiling them) and also some dead coral. Is it acceptable to stock the tank with a few damsels and wait for the bacteria to evolve? The tank...

    coral cleanage

I have some previously owned coral that is discolored by algae. What is the best way to clean it? The previous owner recommended bleach water, but did not specify any ratios. I am anxious to set up my 1st saltwater aquarium and this dilemma has me at a standstill.I have some rocks from the beach...
