How do you add additional sand to your tank?

I did this several times to raise the level of my sand bed. I bought a plastic tube that flourecent lights slide into to protect them (any hardware store) cut it to a few inches taller than my tank. I then cut the bottom off of a gallon milk jug and attached the tube to the spout of the jug...

    Green Chromis Cleaning Yellow Tang

I added 3 Green Chromis to my tank and after being in there about a week I noticed my Tang going over to them and "leaning". The Chromis would nibble at his side for a minute then the Tang would leave... This has been going on now for about two weeks, it looks as if the Chromis are cleaning the...

    Low lighting Corals?

As you can see in my sig, I have several mushrooms and some polyps and only NO lights. I bought two strip lights that hold 2 40watt bulbs each and built a hood to fit them in. Total cost with bulbs was about $70. I have had the corals for about 3- 5 months now and they are doing great! The...

Thanks for the replies! I guess it is the same as the rest of this hobby in many aspects, hit or miss! I will need to make a tough choice I guess.. Thanks again.

    Snowflake Eel and inverts...

I have read a few posts where people have had a snowflake with inverts such as shrimp and crabs with success. Is this the norm or will most snowflakes kill the inverts? I think they are great but would hate to lose all of my shrimp! Anyone have experience or opinions with this?

    coral banded shrimp

I have 5 shrimp in a 55 with one being a CBS. He has never been agressive toward any of my inhabitants and is truly fun to watch! I can't imagine my tank with out one! If you like them I would suggest getting one, but since others have reported aggresion I would watch him when first added...

    Catching Camel Shrimp

All of my shrimp get along with one another. Even the Coral Banded. The Camel and Peppermint all live together on one big rock. I thought that the camel was reef safe as well... I don't have any corals and will check into the safety of the camel before I get any!

My camel back crawls all over my hand when I stick it in! That might be one method!

How to add live rock to a cycled tank?

When I buy my live rock it will most likely be from this site since the cheapest here is $8/lb! I understand that in shipping I will have some die off. If I cure it myself in a cheap 10 gal agauarium is a heater the only thing I need or do I also need a filtering system on the curing tank...

How to add live rock to a cycled tank?

This new forum is great! My tank has been up about five months now and is doing great! I went through a few poblems in the beginning but all is fine now. As the subject shows, I want to add more live rock to my tank since I have so little. Any suggestions as to go about it without hurting my...

    Cycled tank clouding up

I just noticed two things about your sig that had me curious. First you have a snowflake and many inverts. I wasn't sure if this was possible. I think snowflakes are great but thought they would turn my shrimp into lunch! How long have they been together? I would be interested in getting...

    Cycled tank clouding up

The same thing happened to me about a month ago. Except my parameters were fine. The whole tank got cloudy and yellowish. I eventaully shut the lights off except for four hours a day. After 3-4 days the cloudy water started to clear and is perfect now. I now have the lights back on a 9 hour...

    Stubborn Red Slime Algae

I'm still fairly new to this hobby, but had the sam problem about 2 months ago. I finally got out a narrow hose (about 1/4 in diameter) and siphoned the slime off of everything. It took a bit of work but after doing this a few times it never came back. Good luck!

    Do cleaners......

Yes, shrimp will molt periodically. My coral banded has molted at least 5 times in less than 5 months! I thought he was dead the first time I saw it!

    Dwarf Lion

It has been my understanding that Lion fish are reef safe but will be more than happy to have a shrimp or two for lunch! This would be a problem in my tank! But what about dwarf lions? Are they also prone to eat shrimp? Anyone ever try it? Thanks.

    My Peppermint shrimp sucks!

I agree with Jumpfrog, my peppermint shrimp investigate anything I put in the tank for awile and then forget about it. They are scavangers and will most likely not hurt anything. It is better to be careful though so keep an eye out. Good luck and give them a chance, I think they are great to...

    Cleaner Shrimp more sensitive?

It is good to know about their sensativity to salinity changes. I would love to have a cleaner shrimp or two in the future... But how sensative are they? If one does not top off the aquarium every day or two do they suffer or does it takes more. As stated I would also love a cleaner shrimp...

    Emerald Crab

I know my 55 is very different than your 8, but I have had 2 emeralds in mine for about 1 month with a variety of other creatures and they all get along fine. I have witnessed many encounters between the emeralds and the shrimp and all were peaceful. I guess as with many species in this hobby...

Yellowish Water! (I've searched the archive but not satisfied...)

Thanks, I run carbon in the fluval, I'll change it and clean it though. I have not done a phosphate test, I need to buy a test kit for that. The water I use is from a medical research lab that is double RO/DI water so that should not be a problem. I wish I could afford a skimmer... this...
