    Rio Pump Users???????

lilbuddy, The two I have are the smaller excaliburs. The larger skimmers do come with the 1700's. I think im going to buy another set of skimmers. Its a shame no other manufacturer makes a similar pump w/venturi. tangman99, what type of skimmer are you useing?

    Rio Pump Users???????

Seems to me taht the general consensus is they are not very good. (for lack of better term) Both of mine are the 800's on excalibur skimmers. I always have to turn the venturri plate or smack the crap out of them to get mine to come back on. Im still waiting on a email response or a response to...

    Catching Fish

HAH! Cool idea. I think I will try that next time. (Its got to be better than tieing a piece of string to them and then pull them out when you want.):D

    Suggestion for the forum.

I agree. The biggest reeson myself and 30 others I know of come here is due to the fact that we get all different views and then decide the best approach. IMHO, it should stay the same way it is. It was a good idea CUDA had, but hopefully with all of the members already on here and god only know...

    algae sheets

I put algae sheets in the tanks approx every other day. The only exception to this is if I have a surplus of algae growth in one of the tanks and I will go a few days w/o giving it to them. This way they are used to haveing it and if it is not there then they wear the algae out.

My two would sta in the sand bed for a couple of days and then swim (or whatever it is they attempt to do ) straight into my overflow. They finally passed on.

    What the heck is selcon?????

I feed selcon (on top of the food) to my fish every night. That and lots of garlic. I have to say that it keeps my fish nice and healthy. Another alternative is Kents Zoecon (mixture of selcon and zoe) I use both and seem to have great results.

    Rio Pump Users???????

Just wanted to see how many people out there use RIO pumps or powerheads and have had any luck with them. I have gone thru 6 in 9 months. Never can get any response from RIO-TAAM on their products.

    P04 and silicates

I agree with Barracuda. If you water contains any phospates consider getting from another source. If this is not a option then consider purchaseing a phospate/silica remover sponge or media. I know that seachem make this (as do others ) but this seems to be the more readily available at LFS.

    skimmer and UV sterilzer question

Generally the effect of the UV will not adversely change the skimmers progress. There will be times when the skimmer will produce a little tannish water or nothing at all. It will only skim if there is something for it to skim. IMO, I have several tanks and the always have the UV and skimmer...

Should I run carbon in my sump?

All I can attest to is that I run it in both of my reef tanks and have a yellow tang in each one. To this date (2 years) I have yet to have any issues with this. It keeps my tanks nice and clear.

    Starting out

Yea, your well on your way. Like birdy said, just wait. Everything will work it self out. I like the way you have the rock. What size tank is it? Do you like the bow front?

Should I run carbon in my sump?

Two of the biggest advantages to useing carbon is to get rid of any smells that the water may have and to floss (clean/clear) the water. IMO I think it would be to your advantage to put it in while you are still in the fowlr stage. As far as after the conversion to reef, all I can say is I run...

    brown alge

I have found one of the best ways to speed up removal is to get a phosphate/silicate removal pad/media and place in your sump under the intake filter (on top of the bio balls) or if you have a canister type filter place under the exit floss (filter). This is very normal to happen for new tanks...

    Colt Coral

The best way that I have found is to cut the colt with an extremely sharp knife(exacto) parallel to a split. If you have a piece of colt coral that has branched off, "Y" shape, then cut it along the center of the "Y" down. Sorry if im not the best at explaining this. Be prepared for the colt...
