are you sure thats a frogspawn? looks more like a torch coral to me.

Thanks . . . I am pretty sure that it's a frogspawn, although I could be wrong. It was sold to me as such and I have always considered it that. Although, a friend is 100% convinced that its not because it does not look anything like any other frog that he/we have seen. Its difficult to tell from the pictures, but the tips of the "arms" are a brilliant purple/pink which i know to be characteristic of some torch corals. However, I have never seen a torch coral have such inflated "arms" (I don't really know what else to call em, thats why I keep using arms in quotation) nor have I seen a torch that has "arms" with multiple branching habits as this coral does. Almost evey "arm" has at least 2 of the pink/purple tips, and some have upwards of 6-7.
I don't know for sure though . . . . I'll call it the Torchspawn!!
Either way, they are both so closely related that it makes no difference, but it would be kninda nice to get a definite ID.

No . . . this coral has not been fragged. However, what would you consider "good growth" in a years time? It has nearly tripled in size since I got it. If you look at the pics above there is a pic from about a year ago, and you can compare it now, there is some difference in size. Also, it has begun to grow about 6-7 new heads, as well as the main polyp has split once and is in the process of splitting again.
I don't think that its reaching for the light . . . I would think that 150w VHO would be plenty. Perhaps it is just a young coral. Like I said before, it was purchased as a single polyp.
Welcome to the world of nano's kip. You oughta give one a try some time. With all the frags you got, it would sure be easy to stock. What do you think of those zoo's I got? Look familiar?

Some guy down in North Carolina sent em to me back in october. I didnt think they were going to make it because they sat on my porch for a couple hours but as you can see they are still doing just fine. My experiment is going well too. The pic above is of the bottom tank blue frags. The ones at the top are actually starting to turn to a sky blue color.

see . . . now I would call that a frogspawn because of the multiple tips on it. In fact besides the color, your "torch" and my "frogspawn" are very similar. The only difference is color and mine has more tips.
Alright . . . . I am going to just call it a Torchspawn.
Nice zoo's BTW . . . .

now THAT is more what my frogspawn looks like . . . only less divisions.
Is this a bad thing ya' think?

I think you're right . . . I will stick with euphyllia.
On another note . . . I have discussed possibility of putting a 150w HQI halide on this tank and making an SPS dominated reef.
I have two major concerns in doing this:
1. Heat . . . . I know this is going to be an issue but my thoughts are to rebuild my canopy so that the top is slotted to allow heat exit. I would also add two fans opposite one another to create some flow.
2. Calcium . . . . with an sps reef I know that my CA uptake will be pretty high. Is it possible to keep/maintain levels on this tank w/o a calcium reactor and adding loads of supplements.

Just thougt I would post an update pic . . . I have edited the first post in this thread, some of which are in red.
I have a new digi cam so updates should be more frequent. It seems that many have fallen to the wayside in keeping up their posts, but at least for me anyway, its a method to keep track of my tank progress!
Tank as of 3/6/2004

Very nice tank. I'm thinking about switching the PCs in my 29G to VHO as well. Seems like the LPS corals do better under VHO as in my 55G

I contemplated PC's when I set this up about two years ago. One day I was surfing E-Bay and this guy was selling two brand new URI 24" VHO bulbs. No one had bid on them so I offered a dollar and I won both VHO bulbs (50/50 and 03) for $5 shipped to my door!
That was the deciding factor for me and I am VERY happy with my VHO set up. I will never buy PC's after running VHO.

Maybe we can talk kip into joining...the others are almost ready.
I bet that he may be interested as he mentioned something about it before.
On another note . . . what do you think about putting a MH on this tank to turn it into an SPS tank?

Personally I like the look of your current setup. It is beginning to mature and with a few more additions you will have a complete bonsai reef.
If you are considering MH then the double-ended mini HQI setups IMO are perfect for a small tank. Suspended above the tank, heat should not be an issue. If you enclosed the mini in a decorative canopy to match your tank to keep it clean looking, then heat could become a factor. The good news is that with a 22 gallon tank you could use an iceprobe chiller(@$100) to cool the tank ~5-12 deg.

Thats exactly what I had considered . . . . the 150w HQI plug an dplay set up runs around $300 but I cant do the whole pendant thing (apartment) so it would have to be internally mounted and heat is what is stopping me . . .
I think that perhaps I will hold off on the MH until I get a larger set up . . . and like you said, there are only a few more holes to fill in on the current tank and then just let it grow out. Maybe once it fills in then i will reconsider the MH for a larger tank.

just thought some sun polyps or a nice rock of crater polyps would look sweet in the lower spot. didnt notice much orange other than the percs, and I know sun/crater polyps come in a very nice bright orange... just a thought.
