I think that my biggest concern is going to be heat . . . and also, if I do get MH, I am going to want to convert the whole reef to SPS . . . then I gotta start dosing Ca and Alk out the wazoo . . . not really into that unless I had a reactor. Which at this point . . . I can't afford . . . :nope:

I actually have now a tiny little toadstool there but it will be a year before its big enough to occupy that space. i agree on the orange . . . I am looking for some nice Ric's.

Hey welcome to the board!
I would say that a 30 could be considered a nano, but in all actuality its really just a label. THe principles are all still the same.
As for my tank, all the equipment that I use is listed in the very first post of this thread. I do not have a sump or a refugium and I never have. If I had the room, I would have a fuge though.
As for lightingm it really depends on what your goals are for your tank. What you want to keep in it and what not.
If you go to the new hobbiest forums, there is a weekly thread aimed at new hobbiests that covers the basics. I write it each week and its called "Saltwater Aquariums 101: (what ever topic is being covered)" The first week wes on setting up a tank, then last week was on some equipment. The next week is going to be on water sources, filtration and the cycle. After that I will cover lighting.
In the mean time a great place for you to start is to get a good book on aquariums. I recommend "Natural Reef Aquariums" by John Tullock. Awesome book with all the info you need to set up your first tank.
Again, welcome!

007, I am going to model my tank after yours, i really like your setup and everything, but I am just curious, about how much have you invested thus far? I'm a college student, and my wife is a tightwad, I may have to get a second job!

with livestock (corals mostly): $1K+
Basics (LR, LS, and equip): ~$500
I started this while in college as well (since graduated) but the way that I did it was to buy what I could when I could afford it. A powerhead here, a heater there, etc.
In the meantime read read and read some more while you amass your equipment.

I really don't becuase of the way its set up. Its pretty much right against a wall, or at least close enough that I can't get a pic of it. What do you want to know?

I've read the width is 3.2", not sure if that includes the part that hangs inside the tank. How wide of a space is it occupying behind your tank? I have a 3 & 1/8" gap between my tank and wall.
