unfortunatly I dont have black paint so, I'm thinking to build a mock mini stand so the color I do have appears to match by being the same on top and bottom. I am also considering adding a splash guard to protect the light fixture from salt, as its an elcheapo and not sealed at all. maybe just a good coat of silicone over the chasis of the fixture.

using an airline as an overflow and a measuring cup as a sump...... building the overflow unit would require more time and materials than I have on hand.

Actually the filter I'm using an aqua clear 30 is going to be set up fuge style with rubble instead of any mechanical filtration (I am planning on relying on waterchanges and siphoning to remove gunk) and let biological be the mainstay of the tank design. where I am going to have to top off every day and I always have salt mixed I am going to remove some and refresh with a top off of lower salinity. any opinions on this techniqe would be greatly appreciated.

Do a single small clown goby or a pair of neon gobies. IMO nanos are adorable, just too much work for me.

funny thought just poped into my head, if you read around you see people using watts per gallon to justify keeping various things, according to the WPG rule of thumb this 10wattbulb and 1/2 watt lunar light put me at 4.2WPG
THAT MEANS I CAN HAVE AN ANEMONE IN THIS TANK!!!!!
God I hate the watts per gallon rule of thumb, because it really isnt accurate in any way.

You could turn the Aquaclear 30 into a fuge, you already have the LR rubble, just find another light to mount over the HOB and toss in some chaeto. I saw one of these a few weeks back, the HOB was a solid mass of chaeto that was simply harvested from time to time.

Honestly I wont be able to keep anything but the lowest light corals in this tank, the lighting is pitiful, I'm gonna do mushrooms (that doesn't sound right) and attempt to acclimate some zoas to that super low lighting. with the maximum distance from the bulb being 8 inches it helps that they are going to be close to the source. I may upgrade it later to 2 bulbs but I wanted to set this tank up with an overall new cost expenditure of zero dollars. Absolutely everything I have and am going to use to build this tank I already own and is just laying around. I'm currently laid off from work so my income is cut in third. spending money on this is out of the question untill I either return to work or find another job.

I do have a 72k 7 watt PC light that would mount on the aqua clear to grow chaeto. It wouldnt match cause the fixture is blue but maybe I could retrofit it.

here is pic of the stand I built for it, next step staining and sealing. pic to come later. I think I am going to add a band around the bottom of the hood to hide the black plastic on the tank.the question would be how to secure it..... hmmm.

Yeah i was gonna say to build the whole hood bigger and just put some pieces on the inside that would rest on the top....But, you already had it built so it was too late.....
