Asfur is great, eats everything and is fat, looks right at home....Interesting note, he is missing one of his Pelvic fins completely. I email wetwebmedia asking if any chance of it growing back, and wondering if it likely happened being netted or if it could be a deformity at birth. My email was replied to by Bob Fenner whom asked if there was any scarring...I replied none whatsoever. He replied it was very likely that it was a birth defect and asked an interesting question..."Could this have been a captive breed fish? As it would have likely not survived in the wild." I know they are breeding Mac Angels, Asfurs, and Purple Tangs in Taiwan now, the only reason I figured not is that this fish is a good 3 inchs and captive breed fish are usually sold very small. I emailed Mark M. whom said he didn't think so (due to the same reason) but couldn't be sure as the fish had slipped through the cracks somehow and was not even in their inventory.
Fish gets by fine with just the one pelvic fin though, it's rather tough to notice it....I'm guessing about 3 years from now my wife will say "Hey, what happened to his fin?"
I read that a lot is going on in Taiwan and Thailand in the SW fish breeding business. I imagine security is equal to a nuclear weapons lab. They were breeding & exporting many of the more expensive FW fish for years before U.S. importers knew they were captive bred. I've seen how walleyes are artificially spawned in N. Wisconsin. Basically, they just net the fish at spawning time, strip the eggs from females and milt from males into a the same dishpan; where the eggs are fertilized. The fish are released and the fry hatched and reared in the hatchery. ( I imagine the Federal job title for these workers would be "fish masturbater".) Its a very successful program; but they don't have to deal with the fragile larval stages of so many SW fish. I wonder if this would work with SW fish? But, I'm sure its been tried. A couple good spawnings of Clarion or Conspic Angels could be quite profitable. With the prices some SW fish command, I imagine its just a matter of time before we can buy cloned fish. ( I can see the headline "Chicago Bear Fan clones Damselfish".)
