hey jpa0741, I was wondering what you and other do that have large surface areas such as this tank and the sump. That is a TON of surface area - a lot of evaporation will occur with that. I'm just now setting up my 180 and currently have the glass covers on it while it is starting to cycle... there's a whole lot of condensation/dripping on the glass covers, so I know that there will be a bunch of evaporation if I take the covers off.... so are you, and do others just leave the tops entirely open??? If so, do you mind all that evaporation?

I leave it open. I might use eggcrate if I decide to add some wrasses. The more evaporation the less chance of needing a chiller. I have an auto topoff hooked to my ro/di.

what auto topoff did you go with? I would like to get one / make one, but am scared about the possibility of malfunction...

I use an float switch hooked to 2 solenoid valves hooked in to my ro. I have been using for a couple years with no problems. I also have it on a timer so it only comes on 3 times a day. All this helps to make it pretty safe.

I am loving your 240 shallow...very cool, I am 2 months into my 240 8x2x2 FOWLR, shallow is a great way to go especially for a reef setup.
Great job on the plumbing too, very impressive.

Ok. I need some help picking future stocking plans. I know this is a ways off but I just can't decide which way I might want to go. I am looking for a "center piece fish". I am really stuck on 2 options in my head. Option 1= a pair of crosshatch triggers, with this option I would have maybe only 2-3 other larger fish (tang size fish) and of course some smaller fish. Option 2= a group a 3 purple tangs with possibly 3-4 other larger fish plus some smaller fish. I need some votes on these plus any other ideas you might have. Keep in mind it will be a SPS reef with clams.

I like the idea of a few larger "Centerpiece" fish with more smaller fish. Three purple tangs would be cool. Have you looked into any of the Genicanthus angels? A pair of Japanese Swallowtails would be different. I think a group of anthias would be a colorful touch as well.

I plan to do some anthias with either option I go with. I have also been looking at Genicanthus angels.

Ya, me too. I have been collecting a few nice table acros lately. I think these will look amazing in there. I am seeding with some LR and LS for about 4-6 weeks, then if params checkout I will start transfering stuff from the other tank.

Just an update on the skimmer. I have been running it for a couple days now. As you all know all the rock was lace, base rock and the sand was dry sand. I also have the water level in the skimmer turned all the way down to break it in. This morning I see it is still producing a little nasty skim. The foam in the neck is so thick. I am impressed to say the least with this skimmer already. I can't wait to put it to the test.
