I couldn't really find to much info on water depth on skimz site......Actually thought their site was rather vague....

I could of swore you already bought a octopus skimmer? I apologize if I mis read something If not why not get an octopus?

I did......Went through some issues at home and sold off most of my equipment......Trust me I loved the Octopus skimmer, but 1 thing I wanted was to run it in sump. Size was an issue, so I chose to purchase an external.....I've opened my searching again and I'm trying to find something that I can run in sump if possible....

Well, You're definitely looking in the right direction IMHO. I have used cone skimmers for over a year now and love them. They've been a great innovation in the hobby thus far, and probably are here to stay I hope.

I think the biggest key or drawback to me is some skimmer pumps aren't designed to handle depths of water......That is my only reservation with running the XP5000 internally.....Skimmer depth of 6-6 1/2" doesn't leave me much headroom inside the stand.....Where as something along the lines of BM and Skimz so far the pumps are able to run at deeper depths....The problem lies in that no matter how I positioned the sump and tried to align it under the stand, with the size of the Octopus skimmer (which is totally massive) it would fall under a cross support in the stand.......Again no issue running the skimmer externally, but actually fired the pump I was going to use to feed the external skimmer, and to be totally honest the noise level sucks.....
I've used PanWorld in the past and had bad experience with their pumps being inconsistent and failing on my previous MRC beckett skimmer, but thought I'd give them another shot, but noise is bothersome, when I've worked pretty hard at keeping noise level down only to have a noisy pump such as that......

The Skimz discharge water at the bottom of the skimmer. Less back pressure on the pump so they can run at deeper depths without sacrificing a lot of performance IIRC. I'd have to check reviews on those sizes but im thinking theyd do well in 8-10".

Hey.....Tried calling you back last night.....Sorry had to do the dinner thing......
I did see that on the Skimz skimmer and that is a neat idea for several reasons IMO.......That was another reason I started looking at the Bubble Magus skimmers was their running depth in sump.......Honestly I could sneak a Octopus skimmer in the sump, but my ultimate goal at some point is to use a neck cleaner on the skimmer, and with that add on definitely wouldn't fit....
I'm not going to make a quick rash decision on the skimmer just yet......Even though the tank will be fired without a skimmer, but I'm still holding out to see what Avast produces as well.....I had mentioned I had talked to them a bit ago, and they are currently building skimmer bodies very similar size wise as the others, which allow people with tanks to tinker a bit, and I'm anxious to see this 15" body as well..........I still then have the issue of pump choice if I opt this route.....

Anything can be tinkered. :)
Waiting on manufacturers can sometimes feel like a futile effort. I'm still waiting for someone to advance the Vortech design with electromagnetic engineering but I'm not holding my breath.

Why don't you just buy a cone and build you one?

Eco's patents are preventing that at the moment I'm sure off.....
That was exactly my thoughts was to build my own, and Avast prices and work aren't shabby. Easier to let them do the hard part of the project though.....The big issue or key is finding a good pump that will handle the pressure of the water depth.....I thought I read yesterday that Skimz had changed away from the Eden pump......

I think when they first hit the states they had Eden pumps. But then they teamed up with Eden to create pumps specifically for Skimz products.
The ES pumps they have now stand for Eden/Skimz. The numbers on the pump that I have are better than the Bubble Blaster on the same size/class of octopuss skimmers.

That's awesome. Will you send me a pic when you get the chance? I'm anxious to know what the whole thing will look like when you get done.
So close now!
Getting there....A delay today and again on Saturday.....Birthday parties.....

A little productivity.....Been working on my LR layout, and somewhat pleased, but not totally pleased...
Did a little work on the canopy as well to modifiy it some due to tank change after the canopy was built.....

Also had contemplated finishing the eurobracing on the overflow area of the tank.....Actually was short material, and had to do a little piecing and seaming of material and had to spend a bunch of time buffing it out from sanding it smooth.....Overall pretty pleased. I was a little sloppy on gluing up the additional piece, so it isn't a perfect glue joint, but only I will really notice it....I'll try to get a pic of the nasty glue joint.

In the pic on the far right end you can see some bubbles, but not something visual that will be seen.......

Looks good, Shawn. I see you added some molding to drop it down a bit. I don't think a few bubbles will take anything away from the grandness of this build.

This is going to be a show piece. Bubbles blah, tank looks amazing. Can we get a picture with you or someone standing next to it just for scale.
