The whisper is probably trapping nitrates.. high nitrates are bad for puffers.

how does the whisper trap nitrates?
you notice how you can't always get all the CRAP out of the cotton gauze that surrounds the carbon? When it just builds up, its essentially a nitrate factory. Same goes for the uncleaned canister filter. You can do a million water changes, but until you clean that canister out, you won't drop your nitrates.

ive heard somewhere the same is true for a biowheel. I have one on my 5.5 im setting up today. Will i be ok with that if i change it every few months? Im also going to by the red sea nano filter and turn that into a refugium to place next to the filter sometime down the line, would that help?

yep same with biowheels. I would just not run a nitrate trap like that. Use the liverock for that purpose.
The red sea nano is kinda ghetto and small... the pumps die on them ALOT... I'd get an AC20 and turn it down if necessary.

hmm k well i think my plan is just test the water every week or so once its established and if i notice a rise in nitrates try and clean the bio wheel and if not replace it with a new one
would a refugium help though? or if i just took out the biowheel all together and just used the filterpad

i didnt do windex but i spray cologne i had no idea but the guy at my local fish store is helping me out any suggestions on fish??

if you wanna clean it using those products id suggest spraying it onto a paper towel or something similar away from the tank then just wiping it down? I remember at my old work we just used water and a rag to clean the tanks and if you did it right they got pretty clear
