Well there are still some other options with the box so it may still work. They are also talking about shooting something like tar balls to clog the leak. Folks better not sit back and rely on BP to fix this and better act proactively on this. When I say folks I mean states, feds and locals. I wish there was something I could do. Anyway, a friend of mine visiting gulf shores said he thought the water felt oily at times. Not sure if this is true or if his mind was messing with him.

BP should ONLY be working on capping the well right now, that is their main area of expertise and the most important issue right now. The state and federal governments should deal with the clean up, with BP picking up the tab of course.
Could be that dispersant your friend felt in the water.

Yep and that appears to be the plan of action right now. I see now that they are testing some tar balls found on the beaches to see if they are coming from the spill.

Like or not BP Exxon-Mobil and the other majors are the ones with the technology to fix this (or at least the brains and previous experiance to develop a fix for this problem. The Feds really don't.

I guess this spill is the reason gas priceshave gone up 20 cents in the last two weeks? It was $2.59 here two weeks ago, and I filled up in Houston this afternoon at $2.82. The oil coming out of the ground out there right now wouldn't end up at the gas stations for at least 5 years. Just love it when these oil companies use a disaster like this to jack up their prices.

you really wanna know what the deal is, it is the bad euro vs usd, that and it being summer is what is driving the prices back up. Oh and the no new wells garbage.

I will believe it when I see it. I have never seen gas prices drop in May. Gotta jack em up for summer driving season.

Oh I agreed with Reef too. If we see any relief it will be like a one day relief!! I think people are so used to paying $2+ per gallon now, that is now the base price. I assume $3+ will soon be the normal summer price.

Managing a chain of gas stations at one point in my illustrious career provides some insight on why they do the things they do.
People look at oil dropping 10 bux a barrel and think that decreases the cost of gas. Sorry but there is about a 6 week lag before that cheaper oil makes it to the gasoline tanks. Of course when oil goes up the gas stations must immediately bump their price to be in position to pay for that next, more expensive load of gas

I know and that really sucks. If cost of barrels go up, the gas stations immediately jack up their rates even though the gas in the ground is the same gas from the day before!

Demand hasn't gone up that quickly to deplete the existing supply. With the Recession last fall, travel was being limited to geographic locations within 300 miles of people's homes. People didn't, and still don't for the most part, have expendable cash to take long-range trips. Airlines have cut their flights and equipment down, so jet fuel is pretty abundant. I haven't heard any news reports where the American public have stated they will be taking multiple Griswald trips this summer. I don't know anyone who is. Most people I know here in San Antonio are taking trips to Dallas, Corpus, and South Padre, as opposed to Arizona, California, or Florida this summer.
