They say there is anywhere between 60-100k barrels leaking a day. Big difference from the 1k a day estimate BP gave when the leak first started.
Estimated 161 million barrels leaked so far and counting .... definitely will be in the record books as one of the worse spills.

Not the biggest gulf spill yet but if they don't cap it within the next couple months it might be. The other huge leak was closer to Mexico and I don't believe as much of that oil hit the coasts so this might do more environmental damage.

I think the Persian spill was the worse but that was done purposely when they exited Kuwait. 531 million barrels there or something like that.

Wikipedia shows it as the the thrid largest. But what does it matter. When a spill reaches that size, no one can really put a true estimate on the size of the spill. I'm just glad the ocean has the capability to repair itself. Humans will probably do something to the ocean one day that it can't recover from.
Feds halt dredging too ...

The containment cap was also removed because of a robotic collission. I think two people also died due to the accident. Big O will make a statement later describing how the robotic accident was Bush's fault.

I meant Gulf of Mexico, not the world

Oil spill in the middle of the Atlantic doesn't really compare to one in a bay or a gulf.

Must be super duper absorbent!
Well we have the first named tropical storm (Alex) in the gulf now. Wonder if it's going to make the current situation worse or actually help clean the mess up.

Could it be?!?
-- BP: No oil flowing into Gulf of Mexico for first time in months as part of test of ruptured well.

The longer they have the flow stopped the more pressure that will build up. I don't understand why they don't just keep bleeding the pressure off up the pipes and out to production barges. Well, I do. If they let it flow there will be proof of how much oil was flowing and they get fined accordingly.

That is what they're doing. There is going to be alot of head pressure to force that oil up 5000' of tubing to the FSO's...

At the moment they are sealing it to let the pressure build to test it so they can see if they can seal it off in the event of a hurricane. Why? If it fails it fails. If they just produce it there will be less pressure should they have to close it off down the road.

Let's just pray it holds....so maybe the wildlife, fisher"people", and everything else this has affected can begin to "heal".....I think it's gonna take a long time for all the effects of this MESS to ever correct itself :(
