If you do nothing but buy galactic cybernets, you sometimes can have your culture rise fast enough and get up before your colony ships get in.
I have a racial production bonus which helps pad my numbers in that category (as well as a racial negative to culture).
I just got my 6th planet! My numbers will start rising again as I build out this planet. They have been stagnating as it takes a lot of production points to buy a level 12 factory and lots of destroyers.

Beth,
If you can put everything int GC, and maybe you can up your culture before your ships arrives.
In order to get to those levels, it takes patience. Remember that elfdoctors, and I started a couple of days ahead of you. That makes a big difference. Also timing the fleet landings to coincide with your culture increase is extrmely important. You don't want to be sitting around for a couple of days, with open culture, waiting for your ships to land. Also you want to be able to login, whenever you know you'll have enough PP's to upgrade a building. I calculate my PP's per hour, and decide what building I want to upgrade, and figure how many PP's I need to do the upgrade. Than when the time is near I login, and do the upgrade.

I am putting all into to GCs. I guess I'm just the impatient type. Anyway, that's it. I'm not going to make the quota of culture before the ships land.
Hopefully, things will pick up by the weekend.

I'm up to 1201 today. Btw Doc, I did win the battle, it just didn't send me the news till about 3 hours later, guess my fleet in orbit had to chase his one destroyer around for awhile....:D
As it stands, I'm doing better than the 2 frenchies in my system. The next 2 systems have better players, 3 from France, one from Spain, and one from Denmark. I have sent and received greetings to the guy's from Spain and Denmark, and they both speak English..... :cheer: . I just sent them both messages suggesting we ally, because I'm sure the French guys will gang up on us, sooner than later, and one French guy, "angecity", is ranked 179, so I'm hoping they will agree with me. In case I need to translate, anybody know what language they speak in Denmark? I'm thinking it is Dutch. (Don't say "Denish".......:D )

Beth, once you get your math score to 8, the arrival time calculator will give you a figure within a hour of expected arrival so it is a lot easier to calculate.
Belothsurf - congrats on the victory. I don't know what language they speak in Denmark. Are you sure he is from Denmark? There are many more players from Germany (whose two letter abbreviation is DE - it stands for something like deutchland).

What does that mean?

When you signed in the game, you had the option of choosing a race. New players were encouraged not to choose a race. As a support person within the NEMOs, I emphasized production so I get bonuses in this area. I also have a -2 to culture (-10%) - so every cybernet I buy only gets me 0.9 culture points/hr. I also have negatives in speed (I am still very slow even with an energy of 6) and defense (I lose almost all of my destroyers every time I have had a battle).

I have got another question for you guys. I was just defeated by someone on one of my planets without any warning of his fleet coming. How is that so?

He may have launched before you owned the planet, was it a recent planet of yours?

Understandable, the first owner of the planet (if there was one) would have seen you both launch fleets, but neither of the two attackers would have seen each other, nor would they in the event that one attacker took over the new planet with a fleet in flight.

Yeah, I'm going to take my 5th planet tonight, and as it's the last free planet in my system, I'm going to leave a nice size force to defend it for a day or so, just to be on the safe side, in case someone has already launched a fleet to it also..... ......You know, now that I think about it, I hope none of the other guy's in my system know about this web site and are reading this....... ..........I was just kidding about leaving a fleet on my new planet.....it's going to be cooooompleeeeeetelyyyyy un-defended.........:D

Yeah there was no owner. What happend was i made friends with the person that had a fleet there but he didn't colonize it because of his culture so he gave it to me, Then i guess the other player sent his fleet before I colonized it.

So, maybe we can get some of those NEMOS over there to post here in this thread? :happyfish :happyfish
Then, one thing would lead to another, and pretty soon, in no time at all, we will have more fishy people over here! :D
Now that would be awesome!

Well, it does require a lot of patience! A lot of waiting for things to happen, at least during the first couple of wks. But, on the upside, you don't have to have the eye sight or the hand dexterity of a 17 year old to play it.
If you like Sim City you might like this game. There is no graphics, just screens and stradegy, ploting and planning for planet expansion and then conquest. Developing real people allies and alliances to fight enemies. It is like you're sitting in front of a computer with data in front of you, and you have to decide what to do. That screen shot that sammy put up a few pages back is basically what you see. There are few other screens, but not much else.

Each version of the game lasts for 2-3 months. It does require patience and good communication skills to do well. Within the Nemos there are a few high school kids, but most of the players are in their 20's and 30's.
I am one of the elder statesmen at 41. I have really enjoyed this game (although my wife keeps hoping that I get blasted to bits, to get me to stop playing).
I think that the biggest reason that few people older than I are not playing is related to computer skills. If you can make your way around this website, you can play astrowars.
