Yep, he's going to feel horrible for condeming Big Red, when the pep in question reappears after hiding after a moult!
Mine is a boisterous guy but he lives in reasonable harmony with my peps. He doesn't like them in his space but seriously with a their swaying and bobbing, they do play on your nerves after a while so I do cut him some slack.

Here is my thought:
You haven't found a molt, so the peppermint is either hiding or it's dead.
My suggestion would be to move the fireshrimp to the refugium for a little while and rule him out as the killer.

YOU THINK....so when the cops cuff you...fingerprint and picture you....charge you and put it in the paper...and then YOU have to post oogles of bail money
How is that innocent
You know once your name is published...you are always gonna be looked at differently

Very true, very very true.
However, the other pepp just passed on. It was acting funny during the 10 gallon water change and didnt appear quite right after the change. It did not have signs of abuse on it and it wasnt missing any appendages. I tested the water and it was the usual results

I really have no idea why it died. It was not missing color as if it was stressed, if anything it was a tad darker than normal but nothing we havent seen before. It ate last night when we fed the tank. The fire shrimp had nothing to do with this one. Anyone have any ideas as to why this one kicked the bucket?

You mean it just dropped?????
How are you making your water?
The water change water, 10 gallons, was made with new salt. I was using IO salt and now I am using NeoMarine. I mix the water to achieve 1.025 SG. I have it in a tub being mixed by a CA-1800 pump. I buy my water from sprawlmart in a culligan machine. It was just checked like 1 week ago according to the card.

thats odd you saw it drop you know die
I watched it move around slowly and act so abnormally. It clung to the heater on the back of the tank. Its never done that. During hte water change, it stayed up front near the glass. The only time the shrimp are that far from the rocks is during a feeding. I know it has passed on as I went to "poke" it with my grabber and it didnt flinch. I have since removed the shrimp from the water. It didnt flinch while being brought to the surface or out of the water.
Any ideas as to why it has passed on?
The only good news is that the cardinals are accepting flakes at the surface. But now that both pepps are gone, not sure what good that really is.

Just curious, are you adding water at the same temperature?
The CA-1800 puts a ton of heat into the water, it would be as close to 80 as it can be I would imagine. The pepp was acting funny before I took the water out let alone put the water in. The only thing different about the water change is that I used different salt. But again, it was acting funny before I put the new water in.

This just further supports my murder/suicide theory. Kills his friend then the guilt becomes too much to endure and, well, you know.

It is possible that there is still some sort of hitchhiker in your tank that is making snack of these guys. It may have ate the first one and harmed the second ... just want to throw that out there.
It's odd that both are dead, but all other inverts, including another shrimp are fine...

The only hitchhikers that I have seen that have gone un IDed are the 2 black shelled snails. I watched the tank last night and the only things moving around in there are the really really big amphipods. The fire shrimp chased one away from him and the fish dont seem interested in them. Do the amphipods eat the isopods? If so, then there is another factor into the diminishing population of the isopods. A hitchhiker of a larger crab or mantis would be the only things that could be killing the shrimp yes? And I agree that it is odd that everything else is fine.

well, I haven't asked hubby, but I don't know if that big black worm is still in the tank. I haven't seen him since we added the CUC to the tank. Could he have done something to the shrimp? We tried to get rid of him by taking the rock out and letting it air out for a while. I think we even did a fresh water dip and this was all before we ever added any fish to the tank, so at least 3 weeks ago. Of course that thing was in there for weeks before we ever even saw it, so who knows.
