That's a cool idea Al. Never seen anyone do that with an aquarium stand yet.
Per request here's some shots of the center brace, Greg. Every piece of the skin is attached with screws via pocket holes and glue accept for the center brace. I left that piece un-glued so that I can remove it whenever I want.

Removed....

Back on...

The only issue I have is that my sump is so wide I can't get behind the center brace to put the screws back in the bottom of the brace. I could make some pocket holes on the sides of the piece and attach it that way but for now I'm just going to leave it in without screws to hold it since it fits nice and tight anyway I don't really need the screws to hold it in place.

Do you have a good shop, do you you have a mortiser (cuts square holes) if you have alot of this oak I would mortise and tenon everything together and make the wood your supports and the finished product, it would in my mind make a beautiful stand that is strong and functional. Every piece would be fitted together and finished - no covering rough lumber with veneers then.

Well here is a picture of my stands..... baby picture i guess i should call it....

The three boards on top are actually for my moms stand i'm going to be building at the same time as mine. I will be using some of the wood i had dried to finish hers as well. Its white oak as well but it was given to us by my grandpa/ her father before he passed away so that will make the stand a little more special.

I dont think i can ever get chromis again because when we first had our tank they were the fish i started with after the cycle was all done. They were removed from the tank when i added some clowns and the the chromis killed 1 of them and were working on a second by 2nd day.
The fish store told me that the chromis would be ok to add again after the clowns were established but i dont think im going to add any after they cost me that much money. IF i do you can be assured that i will be hovering over the tank with the dip net for a week just in case lol.

So far today has been a good day for project build stands. went at noon and bought the wood and now have it all sawn to the right lenghts. I did decide on my stand to buy 2X8s because im afraid that the oak 2X8 may not be dry enough and may twist with its thickness.
Anyways here are my stand boards

And here are my moms stand boards

My stand will be 44 inches tall and her stand will be 32 inches tall. I also am building her stand big enough so if she wants to upgrade or her tank fails and she wants a 75gal she can put it on here.
Will hopefully have some more progress here in awhile.... just letting my wife clean up the saw dust before we start assembly.

Yean gotta love it. Although i do love the part that comes after the frame better... the cutting of the oak... now thats a great smell. I did get the top and bottom sections of my frame put together but need to wait till tomorrow to do any more.
