The best desktop I've ever owned (besides my Mac) was a discontinued model Dell. Since it was the discontinued model, it was really REALLY cheap. I've had it for 6 years and it still runs like new.
I've heard HP's are good computers as well. I own a scanner and printer by them and they're fine.

My laptop is a compaq (which is HP anyway).....never had an issue with that either....

All computers are the same unless they are a Mac.
They are all IBM parts...Dell, Compaq, HP all of them have the exact same parts. It only matters who put them together. To be honest, just like cars...who had the hangover on the assembly line that made that computer will be the one that screws up all the time.
So look for the fastest processor, the biggest hard drive, the most memory and running the newest operating program which now is Microsoft 7. So any computer sold using for example XP, is old and has been on the shelf for a very long time. Get the best one you can afford. I promise you, any computer you buy today will smoke your old one in speed and gizmos.
Go to Best Buy...don't get the silly extras... the computer is obsolete after the 1 year, so no need to get a protection plan. The Geek squad is ridicules. They only put temp software into the computer, in 30 days to 6 months you have to buy the full version anyway. They are charging you a fee for a free download.
You don't need help from their "geek squad" to remove advertisements for $60.00 .
Get the basic computer and put the programs you want in it. They all have internet all ready to go.
Danny and I used to build computers to sell, until thy started making them so cheaply...back then a good computer ran you $3000.00 for what you can get today for $500.00
Asus brand is great for streaming video, and Acer is also a very nice desktop computer. I don't know what kind of monitor you have, if it's a good one, like a 20 inch flat screen (what I had) you can buy just the computer and save allot of money. Your mouse, keyboard...everything will work with the new computer. I kept my keyboard because it has Hebrew charactors on the keys and it lights up so I can type in the dark.
Stay away from Walmart computers.

I bought 2 laptops from Walmart and had to return them both within 7 days of purchase. They did not run properly.

Hard to go wrong at that price. It should be plenty good enough for most any home application.

You might beat the price by a few bucks going to Wallyworld but SHOULD there be any issues with the machine Bestbuy will have much better customer support.

I don't like Walmart for he computers. They have no peoe who know how to help you if something is wrong and after you open it up...they won't take it back. (5 years ago personal experiance)
best buy is just as cheap...if you want...go to Wamart write down all the specs and match it on one of theirs. Go for an Intel Processor, ...memory and hard drive are the most important...in that order. My Desktop runs AMD Athlon X2...that "2" means it's beefed up and the original processor isn't all that great so they tweaked it to run faster. (easiest explanation)
I don't like the brand your looking at...This is sweet...$549.98 Asus is an awsome computer...At Best Buyope the link works..I have never done this.

personally I wouldn't buy a package from a retailer, buy directly from dell, or HP. You can go in and get a computer that will last you another few years for under 500 bucks. And have a faster processor, and maxed out ram, shipped to your house in a week for under 500 bucks... Assuming you're basically looking for an internet machine slash play itunes and sync your phone..

Agreed. I bought from Dell directly and saved a bundle compared to the same computer at Best Buy.
Meowzer, have you ever looked on NewEgg.com? They have some good deals as well.

NewEgg is really good
...I just thought you liked stores like Walmart and Best Buy...LOL

I can get 7% off dell computers (corporate discount for me and immediate family). I think 5-7 day shipping is free.

I buy the majority of my computer gear from Newegg. Great support and fast shipping.
As far as processing power - go with a Dual-Core at minimum. Quad-Core is all the rage right now, but if all you are doing is surfing the Net and using applications like Office, it's overkill. The more memory/RAM the better. Also want a video card that has its own memory, and doesn't share the system memory. Disk is also cheap. Stay away from any box that comes preinstalled with Vista. Windows XP is solid, but Windows 7 has more/better bells and whistles.
How much do you want to spend for a new computer and monitor? What's the smallest monitor you would want (17", 19", 22" or 24")? I've been doing computers for over 30 years. Give me your budget, and I'll find something to fit your needs.

There is a difference between new and old Vista.
