after a good rinse, replaced carbon and last night checked parameters....

and NO3-20/40 somewhere in between
so it is down significantly after the water change. I am going to go ahead and do a 10% change today too

I would wait until tomorrow to do another water change. Too much fluctuation too quickly could cause stress which causes Ich. Your nitrates are not in a dangerous zone to be in a worry.

You could actually run the filter with no floss at all, just make sure you have a good clean up crew, snails, hermits, etc. The cannister filter would just be used to circulate the water. Just dont overfeed. If you have the extra overflow power filters, set one of them up as a refugium.

yea I think I need to set up a fug asap...and I get some macro from you once I do. I'll need to get a better cleanup crew tho if I am going to take that filter out.....

The problem with filer floss is that as long as the floss is in your filter, so is all the debris. If you change your floss once a month, all that debris sits in there rotting away polluting your water. With a clean up crew, even though they do add to the bio load, most of what they eat goes to nourishing them instead of rotting and all going to polluting your water. Just match your clean up crew to your amount of gallons, 12 gallons equals 12 clean up crew. That could be 6 snails and 6 hermits or any combination of snails, hermits, shrimp, crabs etc.
Whenever youre ready for the macro, just say so. Hopefully your root canal wont hurt and it will save me a Xenia.
