Do corals generate heat???

We clean ours in vinegar. If you've never cleaned it before, it needs to be cleaned whether it's creating the heat issue or not. Calcium deposits and such build up in there. One day, when you're not paying attention, it will stick (It always waits until you are not paying attention... Murphy's Law).
But, more buildup. More friction. More heat.

How do you get the thing out of there? I cleaned the little "suck hole" as I call it..
I'm afraid to start pulling at the pump because it seems so fragile...always feel like the tank is going to explode when I'm messing around in it.

I question that but I don't know enough about water pumps to refute it.
The only way it would produce more heat is if the pump drew more power when it starts to get bogged down. I don't know if pumps do that. I know the pump itself will get hotter with the friction but I would assume the waterflow would be less so the actual amount of heat entering the water would be the same.
Just pondering...

if you're running the stock pump, replace it with a cooler-running pump (a model that draws fewer Watts). the first thing we do is toss the stock pumps in favor of MJ's. i've heard Rios run a bit cooler than MJ's, but i've never completely trusted them since they had all the "failure to restart after power outages" and "burning up" issues of the past.

We had a pump that was heating the water up to 87. We took it apart and cleaned it.... it was running much cooler after that.
I'm not going to take a physics course to understand it, but if a pump that once ran cooler now runs hotter.... my advice is to clean it before you do anything else. It worked for me.

In the back chamber behind the wall behind the return... just pop that hose off. There should just be a connector. If you can't figure out out, I'll get a video.
What brand of Nano do you have again?

I found a website that explains it..a lot easier than I thought. I cleaned it up--really wasn't that dirty. I'll let you guys know if it helps the issue. Thanks a lot.

Ok...cleaning it out has literally changed nothing....
I'm going to ignore the expert opinion and assume that coral have their own heat until I see someone take thermal goggles underwater....

Fan, pointed right at it. WHen a warm object is in a cool room without airflow there will be an insulating bubble of warm air surrounding the object and it won't cool very fast. Blowing the warm air away from it reduces this insulation and it can radiate heat more effectively.

That's not quite true, you now have a clean pump.
yeah...it actually caused a bunch of microbubbles to get into the tank...I've got a clean pump and bubbles...
I'll try a fan next...but I may also just buy another bottle of Dasani for a dollar and freeze it.

I just read through everything, don't know how I missed this thread.
My 14G Biocube never had an over heating issue until I added a Koralia Nano. THE GENERATE A TON OF HEAT!!!! The tank literally climbed 9degrees in less 2 hours, I really thought my fish were done for. I've since removed the power head, changed the angle of the return pump to get more flow, and added more clean up crew to compensate for the lower water flow that was caused by removing the power head. It's working well for me. Occasionally I leave the top open for an hour or two just to get more oxygen into the system, but the powerhead caused a huge amount of heat. Especially if it's the new Koralia Evolution Nano Power Head, that thing gets HOT!
