squid, and they are cheap too! I'm not finding a head chart tho. Do you think that will provide the gph needed?

What about UV lights? I've decided I want to incorporate one into my system. But don't really know much about them. I have a catalog from the Dr's and there are several different ones ranging from really cheap to friggen expensive. What do you guys recomend and where should I put it. I'm thinking about putting it on the intake of the skimmer. But i'm not really sure how that will effect the flow through, and effectiveness of it. The pipes on the skimmer look like they are 1.5 inches and ther isn't a UV system in my price range that has anything bigger than a 1 flow. I don't want to create a bottle neck comming into the skimmer.
So I was leaning towards putting one on one of the pipes comming down from the overflow. But that misses half the water.
But will that make enough of a difference to really matter? And wouldn't that kill benificial organisms if I put it there?

Lotta different thoughts on UV and it's effectiveness (or ineffectivness or over effectiveness)...Depends on what you want to kill (determined by flow rate and wattage)...
But that misses half the water.
Doesn't matter where you put it...eventually it will process all the water...again, flow rate and wattage affect kill rate...
Personally, I don't have one on my reef...do have one on my FOWLR and it's kind of hard to tell if it's effective or not, because the two systems are so different...I'd have to take it off the FOWLR to see if anything changes....Things are going well (no parasites and minimal *no* algae) so I'll let it run...

Lets just say...I have one...I run one...I have a clean tank, with no algae or parasite issues (ever) ...and I don't plan on taking it off...
But I also have another tank...without one...that is also clean..and has never had parasite issues...

Another question, The algea they are suppost to prevent is the stuff that turns your water green or brown. Not the stuff on cyno on the sand correct?

More effective on the Green free floating photosynthetic alge
Not so much on the Brown silicate based diatoms or reddish purple bacterial cyno..

So I'm buying the wood for the stand tomorrow! And the plumbing, I think i'm going to do soft stuff for the overflow then use pvc for the return. I'm going to order the Sequence ReefFlo Snapper Pump tomorrow that seems to fit the app best. The only think I was wondering, the over flow I have is going to have 2 lines comming out of it. And I was going to send one to each tank. But the top tank only has a one inch bulk head in the bottom do you think that will drain fast enough? And when I make a bubble trap how will a one inch gap between the panes be to much?

So I was looking and realized that the bottom of the overflow is going to be higher than the top tank water level. So I'm going to move the skimmer behind the top tank. And use the flow from the skimmer to feed the top tank and drip down to the bottom. And have all the flow from the overflow go down to the lower tank. Anyone have any better idea?

Here are some pictures of the two tanks and my trashed room, and my very ghetto tank stand. along with the skimmer. It is massive.

I have the flow between the two tanks running now, I'm just waiting for the ro di unit to work its magic and so I can fill up my tank.

ARRR my overflow I got is literally a 1/4 inch to narrow to sit on my tank! I can't believe it. The OD is his measurement not the ID. Does anyone have one they want to sell?

I don't understand? The bracket that holds the inner and outer box is to narrow to fit over the plastic trim of the tank?

The inside of the outer box and the U piece is one solid sheet of acrylic! I'll post a picture tonight when I get off of work. The one I have now is 1400 gph and I was hoping to be somewhere in the 12 to 1400 gallon per hour.

Look at this crap. It is 1/4 inch to skinny!
Till I can get a new one in Febuary. I'm going to try to turn it around and hang it with string. LOL.
