"I will sweep away everything in all your land," says the LORD. "I will sweep away both people and animals alike. Even the birds of the air and the fish in the sea will die. I will reduce the wicked to heaps of rubble, along with the rest of humanity," says the LORD. "I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear. For they go up to their roofs and bow to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the LORD, but then they worship Molech, too. So now I will destroy them! And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the LORD's guidance or seek my blessings." (Zephaniah 1:2-6 NLT)

I re-read Acts 1 and 2. I'm still sticking with that the 120 people who were together spoke with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" Acts 2:4
It's very important to keep Scripture in context. The next verses in Acts 2 say: 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
Corinth was an international trade port. Men from all over the world were found here. The Bible makes it clear that they were hearing their own languages being spoken.

That was before the day of Pentecost. Why do you think they spoke with different languages, not the prayer langauge? Please don't think I'm mad at your or anything. haha. I've got a little booklet given by the Church of God International Offices and it says that those 120 people were filled with the Holy Spirit.
Remember Paul said, "Do not forbid to speak in tongues." I like that verse. haha. I've got that underlined in my Bible. My parents would freak if they saw that.

you are correct, Paul said to not forbid speaking in tongues. He also said, however, how to do it properly AND that it was not as valuable as other gifts because it didn't further the Gospel.
The Holy Spirit was promised to Believers. I firmly disagree with 2 "baptisms" of the Spirit. When a person becomes a believer I believe they receive the Holy Spirit. Spiritual gifts are just that; gifts. They are not something to be earned.
No, you don't seem mad at all. Me neither. Good discussion in my opinion. Iron sharpens iron...

Yup.. it's verses like that that remind believers who they worship and have a relationship with. Sometimes we get caught up in the warm fuzzy religion and forget God is Holy... (not sure that is why you were posting that verse but it's what I take out of it...)

I tend to believe that as well for the most part. I think Paul does discuss praying in tongues, but that is to be done privately.

I am a bit late in the thread to a question that has already been answered several different ways but my take on speaking in tongues is like the kids speaking Klingon at comic book conventions.
I mean this without sarcasm, I nor mean it as demeaning, but partially I do intend to reinforce it is NOT recognized by all people of the faith. It is NOT a fact in most churches that the Holy Spirit fills you and overflows your senses. It is commonly believed as mocking God and regarded as rediculous and rude.
I wear it on my sleeve that God doesnt steer my life. But I wholeheartedly respect that it does do good for others and they have the right to worship any way they like. But to answer the direct question about tongues.
Nope, to me its just playing a game while at Church with Church friends during Church services. People feel close and connected when they do it....great! so continue to do so. Is it filled with the Spirit? No not to me. I remain steady in my opinions above.
Different strokes for different folks. I have been giving serious thought to going back to Church latley to try it again, but still on the fence about it.

I know, I really have to walk the walk, and not be so judgmental. Thats the hard part. I cant stand most Pastors or Decons I spend any time with.
Its a pity, and I really even feel embarased about it. Many Many good hearted and rightious men in the faith out there and the dirtbags in sheeps clothing are giving them a bad name.
I will take my time and try my best never to go to a church if I think I might open my mouth and be insulting. Who knows.

But, honestly, it's gotta be the classic...John 3:16.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life."
Probably one of the friendlier Bible verses.

You know, I am really disappointed that a lot of people are just making fun of this Bible thread. You couldn't just respect this one thread and not type your stupid jokes? I don't know what you have been through, I don't know what Christian has put you through that, but know, that Christians are not all like that. I hate how some Christians ruin any possibility of bringing a non Christian to Christ. From all Christians who are not idiots, I am sorry for whatever anyone had to indure while speaking to a Chrisian.

I like Romans 10:9-10. It shows how easy it is to become a Christian. It is stated so clearly that this is all you need to do to go to heaven. You don't need to be baptised, you don't need good deeds you just believe.
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."
My favorite verse is Isaiah 40:31.
"but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Mr Guitar, I'm glad you started this thread, It always make praise GOD that people can voice their feelings about HIM.

I have two that usually get me through whatevers going on in my life.
1) Eph 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. NIV
2) Ecc 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: NIV

The Ten Commandments: Exodus 20:1-17 , New International Version from the blueletter bible site.
Exd 20:1 And God spoke all these words:
Exd 20:2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Exd 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before[fn1] me.
Exd 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
Exd 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
Exd 20:6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Exd 20:7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Exd 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Exd 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Exd 20:10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.
Exd 20:11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Exd 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Exd 20:13 “You shall not murder.
Exd 20:14 “You shall not commit adultery.
Exd 20:15 “You shall not steal.
Exd 20:16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Exd 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
