Having a hard time witht this batch of eggs. I only have a few fry left. I thought that I wopuld have had a survivor from this batch, butnow seems very doubtful. Not sure what I am doing wrong here. I have everything the same as it was last time. Bummer.

Well came home tonight to an empty rearing tank. All of the fry have died from this batch. The only thing that I can assume is the temp in my DT is 80 and so is the temp in the 10 gal. hatch tank. the 3 gal rearing tank is 78. I am thinking this is the problem. Does that make sense for the cause of death? I had a lot of death in the 10 gal after they hatched though, so I am still unsure.

I very highly doubt that the 2 degree difference is the cause.
It could be a number of different things.
My guess is that they are not getting enough to eat, or what they are eating is not nutritional enough.
Are you tinting the water green with good phyto? The green water will help keep in keeping the rotifers nutritional, and it also helps with depth perception. Without the green water, the fry seems to stay with their noses against the glass instead of hunting for food. You will want it greened than you think. I sometimes cant even see the fry that are 5-6 days old because I tint the water so much.
Also it must be a good phytoplankton. Anything that you find on an un-refrigerated shelve will not be good enough IMO. Live is great, but dead will also work as long as its stuff that has been kept refrigerated.
Congrats on the new job mboswell, but I will say that the extra banter makes me not want to follow this thread.. A little is OK, but lets not get too off topic if we can help it.
I am still wanting to try and make it up to see your setup and get some information. It may have to be after the holidays at this point.
Anytime.. Its sometimes difficult for me too this time of year to find time.
I have 30-40 (poor hatch) going through meta right now, and a few hundred just hatched last night.. Tomatoes should hatch tonight or tomorrow night. Another batch from the parents of the 30-40 that will hatch Wed-thur. Negripes havent spawned in a few weeks, nor has my second pair of percs.

Rod,
I just want to say how thrilled I am to have you here helping out in the Clownfish forum.

I enjoy helping......

One of these days I would like to get my name changed (maybe you can help) but apparently I registered on this site many years ago and no longer have that email account that I registered under.

"Clownfishes" by Joyce D. Wilkerson is a good book! Its very detailed on breeding and how to care for the brood. It will definitely help you

The larval tank should be close to 80f. put an airstone under the heater to distribute the heat evenly because the larva will go to the warmest part of the tank and the hot heater will kill them if they linger around it. Also cover the light on the heater with electrical tape because the larva are attracted to the light

Thanks for the advise. No eggs as of yet. Rod, can you PM me with a phone number, so I can contact you. I would like to be able to make it up this weekend if it is possible on both your and my end. If not I know it will be after the holidays.

Good advise. Especially the airstone under the heater. As for the taped light.. I only have one of my heaters taped and the others still show light and cause no issues. 80 is a great temp, but also not all that critical.

Sent. If I dont see you, good luck with the next hatch, and keep up the good work/trying. There will be plenty of opportunities and it will get easier.

I transfered the eggs tonight. They are in the 10 gal tank and I have the air stone under the heater. I have the heater and stone on the back wall of the tank and the part of the LR with the eggs is in the front, does this make a difference? I usually had the srone closer to the eggs for agitation.
