dont feel bad seasoned vets and myself get the same treatment
. We ALL have done stuff we shouldn't have done or added something we shouldn't have added. some of the things I tried when I started (on a 30g with underground filter, live rock meant a guitarist and drummer, crushed coral and a single strip 20w flourescent) were picasso trigger, hippo tang, condi anemone, cleaner wrasse, lunare wrasse, basically anything deemed cool at the pet store (not all at the same time. once something died I'd try something else). basically the ONLY thing I ever had appropriate were damsels and clownfish from 1994 up til oh about 3yrs ago. I even had the underground filter until 3yrs ago. Hell I have a friend with a doctorate in marine science, yes he's Dr. my friend, has done extensive research projects for the virginia institute of science (his bach of science is in marine science as well) but he doesn't know diddly about closed system aquariums. he still thinks underground filters cant be beat
if you asked him right now what kind of filtration to get for your new set up he'd tell you to get one.

That's the most frustrating thing I have noticed so far. I would take the anemone back but I think he still probably has a better chance in my tank over Petcos. I am going to upgrade my skimmer too and get the damsels out.
I guess what gets me is I am a member over on a softball website with well over 10K posts and I know so much about the game it's actually kinda pathetic. I see people come on everyday after doing things that are/were borderline retarded and I still wouldn't come at them like some people on here do. I'm here to learn and I do listen to ALL of the advice I am getting. I guess the good thing here I have the funds to do whatever I need too, and I am willing to spend as much time on it as I need too also.

here's the thing to take into acct with an lfs man, if something goes wrong, theyve got a dozen other tanks they can switch em out too, fish have to acclimate to a new tank, and that takes time, and a lot of people will tell you to set up a QT tank asap, cause you are liable to have some problems, and its liable to happen in just a few weeks, and if that does happen, you are going to want somewhere you can put what fish you still have alive. and that panther grouper you have, he's going to get big, and he's going to get big fast
I was reading this thread and all the replies and couldn't beleave how long I had to go until someone picked up on the panther grouper ! He doesn't have to worry about ever catching the damsel because this fish is going to eat all of them. This fish grows fatser than any fish I've ever seen and loves to eat. I think mine grew the same size as every fish or shrimp he ate. They also produce massive waste. He will get big enough to eat every fish in that tank including the blue hippo before he gets big enough. Good luck.

Yeah I knew that. He's pretty small right now and I know for sure I will have a 220-440 by next year so I'm really not concerned about it. However the store told me he would only get 10-12".
[/QUOTOne of the most important rules of fish keeping ( besides the other thousand that are this important ) Don't EVER get a fish with the expectation that you are going to get a bigger tank by the time he gets bigger. Alot of things can happen in life that can delay or prevent you getting a bigger tank and that fish has his life in your hands ! On another note, did I mention that he will be eating all your other fish that count on you too. That panther grouper will be big enough to eat most all of those fish with in two to three months if fed right.

Well I do have some 55G's around here I could put him in alone if I need to. I understand the part about things happening but I'm 99.9% sure I am going to purchase a very large tank in the very near future. However, I found a local guy tonight that said he will even buy the grouper from me for his saltwater tank to go with his lionfish. Maybe I should just sell him to him...
Also, what did you end up doing with your panther?

Ok I replied after reading only half the thrread becauseI was so shocked about the grouper. I admit I jumped the gun and apologize to you. I can tell by reading on that you are learning and taking the advice seriously, so I commend you for that. We were harsh on you but sometimes that can wake up call is the best. You took it well and that shows in your answers. My last peace of sound advice to add to all this is that you mentioned that your friend wanted that grouper but you didn't know if his tank was OK for it. It is now your turn to advise your friend on the grouper and cure his desire for the fish. Some of the most beautiful and desireable fish are the ones that have specific needs and are not always in our ability to give them. Good job learning and again I apologize for being rough.

Actually I don't know the guy. I just know the one of the guys at ***** who knows a fair amount about saltwater and he said he knew a guy that was looking one to put in his tank with his lionfish. I will find out more this week. I don't mind giving the fish to the guy if he can take better care of him. I surely don't want him messing with my other fish. I honestly don't care if he eats the damsels though...LOL. I plan on catching them this week though.

They are actually good in tanks with lions. Usually someone that has a lion has a large tank set up for aggressive and messy eaters. They don't have compatibility problems. I had a tank with a shark, ghost eel, panther and puffer. The tank was large enough and had the proper filteration but I was moveing from Florida and no longer wanted the maintenace of the aggressive fish so I sold all of it.

Gotcha. I will probably just let him have the fish then. I think he has a 125, but I'm not sure.

Yeah I guess we were a little hard on you. It is a nice tank cool rock work. I would hold off on giving the guy the grouper intill you have caught the damsils. Witch good luck on that with the rock in there
them little guys are fast and know that tank better than you do.

Well I had a guy come get the Copperband Butterfly and the Chocolate Chip Starfish today that has a much more established tank than me. I did manage to catch 4 of the damsels...I dropped some food in and caught them when they flew up to the top, but man they are fast. After that the other 4 went into hiding and trying to catch them was a lost cause!

I'm not going to put anything else in it anytime soon. Some of the fish came with the tank, then I added some. I carried water this past weekend to a few different LFS's and everyone of them said I was 0-0-0 across the board.
somebody probably already told you but i had to stop and say. DUDE are you crazy, lol! that panther once he gets big enough will litterally eat most if not all of your fish! i doubt you read much, your WAY overstocked.

Everything is still alive and well. Like I said the damsels only pick on each other. I have had them for over a week now and they haven't messed with anything other than their kind. The other fish are kinda pushing them around. I plan on getting the other 4 out later this week though.

I read plenty but I still did as I wanted too. I didn't read much on groupers though. I've got someone that wants him so it's no big deal. I actually measured him today when he was up beside the glass and he is only about 2.25", quite a little fellow right now.

You can build a DYI fish trap pretty easily. You will get them evetually in that. Basically an old juice container works best. Cut off the top and put it in backwards with some food.

I actually thought about that but the 4 I caught I caught fast with no real trouble. After than all the fish went into hiding so I left them alone. If I try again later and cant get them I will make something to trap them.

THey are one of the coolest looking Juvi fish. If they could clone one that would stay that way and wouldn't grow big enough to bite a finger off, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I've been told they get ugly quick

Actually, If you really read his thread then you would relize that he reads and reads well. Maybe you wouldn't have said this had you read his entire thread !

Please don't tell me that you think panther groupers get 10-12 ft. They actually get about 27-28 inches long. Thats big enough to eat everything in his tank except for him ( If he was in his tank ).
