Excellent, Flower!!! You did it too!!!
Yeah it looks like the reason you are only getting a trickle into the fuge is because of the way the hoses ended up landing behind the stand. Much of the water is bypassing the opening on the fuge side of the drain. I pretty much had to guesstimate the best I could without being able to actually be there. Because had I been there to set it up in person then I would have hooked you up with something that woulda been a little more user friendly to use. That plumbing there is a little more like a universal design I guess I would say.
But it seems to me like you could use just a little more water going over to the fuge. And the way you do that is infact easy to do....go ahead and leave the valve on the fuge side all the way open. And then just close the valve going to the skimmer side off a little bit. The more you close off the valve going to the skimmer side then the more water will back flow over to the fuge side. You'll just have to guesstimate by eyeballing it the best ya can. As mentioned before you're looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of a 1/4 to 1/3rd of the drain water going to the fuge side. Shawn did a good job designing the fuge drains so you really shouldn't notice much water or air (hopefully) coming out of the bottom of those at all.
Edit: I just noticed that I left the hose clamps off of the bottom two hoses. I think I threw the extras in the box for whatever reason. You could probably put them on or leave them off. Those hoses are on there so tight I don't think you're going to have a problem with them leaking at all. But it's up to U...if not then keep them as extras just incase.

I wouldl never have thought to turn down the sump side..Your so smart

My Good Cyber Friends
Nitrates were everywhere giving me fright, water changes each day and into the night. But when you have friends who love saltwater fish, the worries turned into a sump/refugium wish.
Shawn got together all the smart ones online and decided to make me something divine. While Meowzer hunted down the perfect skimmer for me, Al&Burke started measures as swift as can be.. making sure it can fit in the cabinet you see.
Then others jumped in with opinions and thoughts. Post counts kept rising as help just poured in. To thank them all proper, where could I begin? Monsinour, U Mike, Posiden, Spanko and Gemmy. Even Beaslebob showed up 13 pages later…with all of that help, oh what could be greater?
To my amazement Corey stepped in, He created a gizmo and blocked it all in…… to sit on the tank perfect …an award he should win. He did all the plumbing and put it together, he made it so well it will last forever.
Desertdawg and 1snapple had questions to ask, and they got their answers we raised to the task.
Shawn with your cold, skinned knuckles a plenty, made the sump/refugium with help from so many. My friend posted pictures so all could see…the beautiful sump/fuge he created for me.
These folks didn’t know me, it’s all cyber space…I wish they could see this big grin on my face. I wrote you this poem, I want you to know…I will always cherish your friendship, my hearts all aglow. What a shame it belongs in the cabinet below.
The end…
I said it’s the end but the story kept going, and the list of sweet kind ones just keeps growing, now there is Sparty…059, Smartorl and Scott T, I have added these three. And here is the story of why it needs be.
The boxes arrived on my door step one day, everyone was excited to see what I would say. Now we are upset by the UPS guy, before I could sign for it, he took off on the fly. After opening them up, now we know why….
The sump and refugium, Acrylics sweet works of art…. were pulled from the boxes all broken apart. We called UPS… expecting insurance money..the way they have handled the claim isn’t funny. We gave them our pictures, they even came to the house. In my story they are the bad guys, the villain and the louse. Lower than pond scum for what they have done, of the insurance money we have seen none.
The sump is now costing, it isn’t for free. The work and the time and materials you see. I thought it was lost, that it was all over…but because of all these people there is a makeover. Monsinour has offered to make a road trip, nobody is trusting my new sump to ship.
/>
Then Slice stepped up full of confidence, making a road trip he was just nonsense. I can make you a box, yes that was his boast. I make boxes for a living, and I’m better than most.
He asked for the sizes and what each would weigh, but before I go farther there is more to say….Al made the fuge and Acrylic the sump, don’t worry they told me..this is just a bump nothing is going to stop us from making this sump.
Well Slice made the boxes, he did them up right, then he added our logos, it was such a delight. They made it here safely… we sent them Fed X…and we still wait for money from UPS.
Now the hoses are hooked up, the water is running, the sump working like clockwork and the fuge is online. Everyone’s effort has made this come true, so I wrote this poem to thank each of you….

You never told us your mom's reaction or maybe I missed it????

LOL...I m a big woman and here I am sitting on the floor...I could not for the life of me lift that sand. So I asked my mom to bring me a cup to scoop the sand up and put it in the fuge. The cup was too big I needed someting more flat. She brought me a plastic bowl. So I got the sand in finally scoop by scoop and I had my tub all full of new mixed water sitting handy next to me. I put the hose in the fuge and turned on the pump (the system was shut off for the moment). The fuge filled and never even made a sand cloud. It filled up just where I wanted it and I pulled the plug.
To be honest for that moment my mom nor anything else in the universe existed. It was just me and the fish tank and then me getting off the floor holding onto the coffee table to help lift. So I have no idea what her reaction was...I know she was worried because I was on the floor and running around trying to help. All I could think of after it was running was geting online to tell everyone.
I have to get to work...it's getting late.

Flower that is an awesome poem, thanky you, thank you everyone. I always say this to my son,
If everything was easy - you would not learn anything new
If everything was easy - everyone would do it
If everything was easy - you would never appreciate something when it was done
Have a great day everyone!

Well the thread has finally run its course. And soon will be going the way of the Dodo, The only thing left to post is when UPS coughs up the insurance money. I'm going to miss running home and seeing what everyone posted while I was at work.

LOL...I asked my mom how she felt because Shawn had asked. I was right; she was just concerned because I was on the floor. She likes to look at the fish tank and could easy do without it, but she knows I love it.

The reason on the floor is such a challenge is that on top of being a big girl, I have arthritis in both feet and knees as well as my hands. I get on the floor all the time to putz with the tank and my mother calls it a labor of love.

A special Thanks for MY fantastic five! Everyone pitched in, but you five outdid yourselves and went way beyond the call of duty.

Shawn, I can’t say enough thank you’s or comments...you are so awesome! Not only did you start the whole thing rolling, you remade the refugium twice, got hurt and in the end spent so much of your own money at a loss. You are a rare gem, I’m so proud to be able to call such a man a friend of mine.

Corey, I adjusted the valves and both the sump and refugium are running good now. At first I over did it and the fuge hose was making a sand storm...that didn’t last but a moment, all is running perfect now. Thank you so much for doing all that plumbing for me and knowing just what to do to tweak it to perfection. You made everything so easy for me to do it here at home. That video you made to show me how things worked...WOW that was nothing but kindness.

Al, without those measures this project would have taken twice as long I’m sure. Then you stepped up and relieved Shawn of some work by doing the fuge....and boy you sure did a great job. I have a refugium..I'm still in shock that it is really under the stand running, I keep checking. I put the sand in it 2 minutes after it arrived at my door.

Slice, LOL...what can I say about those unbelievably strong shipping boxes that you designed. You got my precious gifts to my door in one piece. Those stickers just glowed with the love you sent, so playful..So you. You were the Calvary arriving just in time.

Monsinour, I know you were going to drive and make the trip, shows what a great person you are as well. Just the idea that you were willing speaks volumes, and I know you were all set to go when Slice stepped up saving you the trip. So while you may not have done it in action..The intent counts.

This has been such a cyber adventure; I have had so much fun and learned so much. That far outweighs the sad, angry, painful moments that we all shared along the way. When my nitrates go down and say down, I will let everyone know because I will be buying coral!

This thread will never end, look at how many pages there are!!! it's a shame to let this one go, it's like a book about great people doing great things for other people they don't really know,
it has it's rough times and it's great times.
I might just print it out and save it.

You guys really did go above and beyond, I want to say my thanks to you all. I am so glad Flower got her sump and fuge before the new year. If anyone deserved it I think you did. You help so many people all day long giving helpful knowledge to everyone.

Wow what an awesome poem, and thanks for including me even though i only had one very small suggestion...
It's really cool when a forum comes together to help each other. we do it all the time on our local corvette forum when someone has a problem or even just to help with swirls in the paint.... .
It makes you proud to say you belong!!!
Thank you Flower for this wonderful thread and all the high's and low's it provided, may it never die!!!

Slice stepped up saving you the trip.
Repentance for not stepping up the first time. My heart sank (and thoroughly pissed off Shawn) when I saw what happened the first time, knowing I could have prevented that.
As for the stickers, Meowzer saw them before you did, she keeps good secrets.
I enjoy doing graphics, if I had more time, Shawn and Al would have had proper logos on their cartons.

Flower, that poem was great. I'm still amazed at the people that pulled together to make sure this happens. It's just awesome. May you soon be buying the treasured SPS corals.
Stupid UPS needs to pay up!!!

It's been a pleasure and an honor, Flower. Both of which I'd gladly do again in a heartbeat if given the chance. I hope that your new system turns out to be everything that we all hoped it would be for you and that it lasts you for a long time to come. I'll be looking for your diary thread to hopefully begin soon so that we could continue to follow your progress with it. I think that this thread here was a pretty educational one, myself. I think we touched upon alot of areas about a system. It would be nice to see a new one begin that touched upon it's environment as well.
Big hug and Congrats!!!

Was never upset with you guys!!!!!! I guess I needed the fire stoked alittle hotter!!!!! Excellent work by everyone, and as Corey said anxious for the next one!!!!!! I think we did touch or cover a lot of subjects here....I guess it was educational in more ways than just the hobby.....Showed me there's still compassion in people's hearts and willingness to step up and overcome all the obstacles out there.....

LOL...Update:
Two days ago my Nitrates were 5.0 I just did another test and the results today are: 10 It has been bouncing between the two numbers.
Skimmer is working great. I still haven't been able to get the ATO working right, I attached the sensor to the output tube in the center of the sump from the fuge and it pumped too much freshwater by a half inch, about a gallon. It didn't move the SG so I guess all is good but I detached it before it could dump more in...frustrating.
I should add something more to the refugium...I hate the idea of macroalgae, it was such a bust the last time I tried it. I did however find a tiny brittle starfish in the fuge... I was very happy to see the little guy, I figured if I see one I have more hiding in there.
I am trying to set up a mini version of this sump on my 30g. copying Corey's plumbing. I will have the intake on one side, and the fuge on the other , overflowing into the return chamber in the middle. (listen to me, it sounds like I know what I'm talking about!) I need to get someone to cut the glass for the baffles. Here by me, Ace, Lowes nor Home Depot will cut glass, so I have to go to a glass place. I am going to get the smaller CPR overflow, and the Ehiem 2000 pump. Shut off valves for both lines too, it makes tweaking the flow so easy.
I'm wondering if I can get the exact same skimmer, or is it too large for the 30g? I have the space to make it go in the 30g sump.
