Weekly update time: saturday goofing off.......
hung my halides

set up my return pump as well as the egg crate pieces with pvc between them for my benthic zone style sump.
the eggcrate will be covered with live rock on top and both ends to slow flow down in the eggcrate area as much as possible, creating an ideal low flow settling area foir detritus and for benthic fauna to grow such as squirts, micro dusters, poriferans etc.
I will probably be putting a dish for a mini DSB in the sump as well to assist in denitrification, but I want it removable.

Over view of the entire set up so far

I need to figure out a better spot or a way to lift my ballasts up in case of water over flow and shield them from splashing.. one for the drawing board. suggestions? rremeber the couch pushes tight to the stand so they have to be far enough back to NOT touch the couch and become a fire hazard.

I have decided against a DSB in the display, for a couple reasons
1< cost
2 not that worried about denitrification in the display my sump is large enough to run either a mass amount of cheato (or other macro) I may even set up an algae screen not 100% sure yet
3 Cost lOL
so the decision is between a 2 and 3 inch sand bed I still have 5 gallon bucklet full of old sand from my old tank that I will spread first as a "base layer" because its all gunked up and dead, nothing like starting dirty. dont ask
so i need another 8o LBS of sand I will probably order online since the LFS's sell it at $34 a 20LB bag. nutz
I can get it online for 39 for a 40lber
rock shall be a HUGE challenge, spring needs to get here so the side jobs pick up so I can make some serious $$$$$

I have never used play sand I have only ever used aragonite sands. I'll have to give that some hard thought.

What are the dimensions of your tank? Doesn't look like a six footer?

this week I should be able to get the sand and last couple plumbing parts for the tank. and maybe next week salt.... one step closer hopefully. then comes the expensive part of starting to accumulate Live rock......

Sooooooo I went and bought 200lbs of play sand which I am going to top with aragonite. 15$ for enough to do what I want. I have decided to eliminate the Under sand closed loop because I dont want PVC pipes sticking up out of my sand bed. I will probably wait until summer and buy a decent external pump and do a right proper closed loop. I shall just use regular powerheads untill then. so next step is enough salt to fill the tank with water..... and to to the post spike waterchange.

I do intend to use skimmer, I am going to purchase a new one later on. havent decided on the make yet.
as for a controller I use timers on my lights and wave strip for my pumps I am not high tech enough to go all out for a controller.... yet

Sand in tank

Starting to add water

this is all the water I am adding for now, the salt I had was old and started to precipitate calcium as I was mixing it so I stopped here, this is fine I will get new salt, and the sand will cycle fine without proper calcium levels etc. I added a cube of formula one frozen food to begin the nitrogen cycle.

toying with the idea of a floating algae screen in the sump: basic Idea 65w PC light, frame made of pvc pipe glued together so its water tight and floats float it over 1/2 the sump so thats roughly a 10 inch by 24 inch screen. the mesh suspended at water surface level.... just a thought for the moment.
I need to look into some skimmers because I know I want one of those I cant seem to find the powerhead for my coralife Super skimmer which was not my favorite skimmer ever invented.
also found a UV sterilizer I forgot I had, so I will be installing that in the sump on the basis I will turn it on if I need it. other wise it wont run at all.

Interesting idea. I have a homemade spraybar I rigged up on a power head. On the very top, close to the rim in the back... gets algae, a flat layer between the rim and the bar....it seems to do a good job of eating up phosphates so I just take a paper towel once a month and with a dip I remove it...it is mostly attached to the spraybar and leading to the overflow box, and in a month it's all grown back. I bet your floating mat idea would work great as long as there is a ripple of water going over it.

I think you will be happy that you didn't do the in-tank closed loop. When I first saw your design, though intuitive, could be a nightmare to service especially the pump depending on it's location. I think you will be happy having waited to do a standard CLS. I run my 125 without a CL, though when I upgrade I reckon I will incorporate one. I have two MP40's and with a good flow going through the sump I think I get plenty of flow throughout the tank with few, if any, dead spots.

I concur, the thing that worried me the most was if there was a blockage I would have to rip apart my sand bed to remove the piping and unclog it. especially if I glued it solid. if I didn't glue it solid then there was the risk of pipes seperating under the sand. its something I will probably try on a small tank with a sand bed just deep enough to cover the pipes.

well, its been a hectic weekend. I bought a truck yesterdayso have spent time working on that. I did manage to buy my salt mix, so I will start filling the tank after I have some lunch.

tank is up and circulating with heat. and only one power head for now. the play sand is so light that it blows all over if I am not careful. unfortunbately half my powetrheads do not have mounting cups any more. I'll probably just end up getting some new ones.
