This is a very interesting thread! How come you are not thinking about Lionfish or a some kind of trigger? They would be a cool addition to your tank!

really wanted a lionfish. But they usually don't do well with puffers - the puffer will likely try to eat their fins. And with how much my puffer eats, I wouldn't be surprised if a lion would be a quick target.
I'm considering a blue throat trigger. Man, I sure wish clown triggers weren't so terrible, I would love to get one.

Hey Hef ! Glad the tank mates are doing well !

If you are going with a trigger, you should get the Humu Humu, I am getting him tomorrow with a Porky, I can't wait !

I know that Lions and Puffers don't mix well, however I had a Lion and Puffer in a 90g before and they were ignoring each other all the time.
Anyway... Good luck! This thread makes me want to start an aggresive tank again! Keep us posted.

typical that it swims back and forth... not typical that it's a sissy ) How big is it? I've heard that they can fool you until they get larger - then you wake up one morning and everything in your tank is dead except your clown...

Just wondering... how was your puffer otherwise? pretty active or lazy? What type was it?
I sure would like to try it out, but would hate to see things go bad. I wonder if it would have been better to try it out by putting in the lion prior to the puffer...

I'm thinking the whole clown trigger myth of waking up one morning and finding every fish dead is exagerated. Have you ever heard or read any actual first hand events of this happening? How many people have clown triggers and what percentage of these people wake up to find all their other fish dead? Yeah, no doubt they're agressive, but I don't believe that every clown trigger will at some point kill everything in sight.

yeah, I would agree that it is probably over exagerated too. obviously not all CT's are monsters. I guess that their aggressive nature gives them the bully reputation and then a story here or there makes people worry about what "might happen". I would love to try one - but I'm not sure the risk would be worth it for me.. especially if it did what the one below did...

It is really a toss up that all depends on the clown trigger you have, Some are docile and some are terrors. My uncle had one with a emperor angel for about 6months and then one day it snapped and killed the emperor, a lion and a snowflake eel.Its atleast a 50/50 risk and with an exspensive fish such as the blueface angel i dont know if you want to take it.

Yea, I wouldn't mind trying one but not in my current tank. If I did want a Clown Trigger I'd have to be very selective with its tank mates, probably only pick fish that could take care of themselves and make sure they're all approximately the same size. I'd go with maybe a couple of other triggers, a grouper, eels, that sort of thing.

I had a Spiny box puffer, and a black Volitan Lion. I had my Lion in there first. Puffer was pretty active and didn't care for any of my fish.

Well, just wondering.. what would you all do if you were in my shoes? Think I ought to try a Lion? Don't worry, I won't hold you all accountable if things wouldn't work out. But I just had thought it wasn't an option with the puffer. And if you recommend that I do.. which would you get? volitan, radiata, etc?

We all take risks in this hobby sooner or later. Sometimes it pay's off, and sometimes it just doesn't work out. You can always sell the fish to someone else if it doesn't work out for you. As far as what Lion? It is really up to you... I always liked Volitans, especially Black V. Radiata is also a nice one, but I think it is less hardy and more $$$. Well, whatever you decide I wish you good luck!

I think that is correct.... I had to go back and look at your pictures of the stand and sure enough!

I would rethink the Clown trigger if I were you guys. I had mine for a little less than a year and he grew from 3" to over 5.5" and was thicker than most of my 8" fish.
This guy was very interesting but did not put up with any crap from anyone. He was subsiquently taken out of the tank when he started to stand down with my 10+" emperor and was chasing my 3" bandit angel.
I am not saying that the CT couldnt have lived with the other tank mates, but I was quickly seeing that his attitude was changing and when he got to around 8" (in around a year or so) it would be a whole new ball game.

Well peeps, my next question of the day has been - what lighting to replace my CF's with.
Ccampbell, thanks again for your help with the messages, but now to try to do a quick discussion.
Questions:
1. I have a 6 foot tank. If I get a fixture: is a 4 ft fixture enough light, or should I get the 6 ft fixture?
2. If I go with the 4 ft: Should I go with 4x, 6x, or 8x of the 4ft bulbs?
FIXTURES I'm considering:
1. Nova Extreme 4ft T5 fixture with 8 bulbs. Cheaper but only one reflector.
2. Nova pro fixture (4 or 6 ft) - Both are quick expensive. The 6 ft has 12 3ft bulbs - $$$ to replace bulbs too.
3. Marineland 4ft fixture. Only 4 bulbs and 1 reflector, but super cheap.
4. Nova extreme retrofit kit. As many as I want/can fit. I would have to assemble, but one have individual reflectors and I could make the hood I have been thinking of making.
Sorry for all the info... But any thoughts?
