Our power went off at 6 pm but, for a change, the generator started right up. I have it wired through a transfer switch to 6 circuits, but I am only using the fish tank circuit to conserve gas since this could be a long outage. I also got a message that my building at work is without power, and I'm guessing that I will lose my 40 gallon reef system there. There goes 2 years of keeping a borbonius anthias down the drain, as well as a great coral collection.
Bummer. They intentionally cut power in one area to keep the steam generators from being ruined by flood waters. They might be able to get the power in that area back on reasonably fast if the surge reseeds fast enough, keep your fingers crossed.

Made it through the night with no issues. Seem to have gotten pretty lucky in my area. I know of towns both east and west of me that got flooded out that are further from the water than I am.

She lives 20 minutes from me, further NW on Long Island. Not close to the water at all so I'm sure she wouldn't have any problems with flooding at least. No idea about wind damage in that area though.

Amazingly, I did not lose power. It seems like north of me (more towards NYC) got the worst of it. I have several friends up there that have been without power since last night.

Thanks for your concern. The generator is holding out and the tank at home seems normal. I just got back from checking on my 40 gal reef at work, which has been without power since early yesterday. My borbonius anthias is dead, the clown and mandarin are alive, but not happy. The corals look like death, but they haven't had lights. More worrisome, the water temp was 64 degrees. I ran a line to an emergency outlet down the hall and connected the return pump and two heaters. Once the temperature stabilizes I'll replace one of the heaters with lights. I feel terrible about the borbonius, though.

Oh well. You are doing what you can. Sux to lose any fish but a show fish like that makes it even worse.

Update from the storm wars:

Saturday the electricians at work powered the entire building and moved the cables powering the fish tank to their normal outlets. Unfortunately, they did not know that the GFCI had tripped, so even though the tank got power, the heaters did not. I came in Sunday and the tank was at 54 degrees. The clown and mandarin appeared dead, but responded slightly when I went to remove them, so I left them in the tank and reset the GFCI.

This morning (Monday) both fish were alive, active, and ate greedily

The corals and inverts - not so much good news. Some corals are clearly dead, and others are retracted. I have seen only one nassarius snail moving - all of the other snails and crabs are dead
. I can't yet tell whether the cleaner clams are alive or not.
?
The big decision now is whether to break the tank down and restart, or try to repoopulate the current set up. I'm leaning towards scrubbing all the rock, breaking down the sump and doing a thorough cleaning, and restarting.

I'd think the snails and crabs would be able to withstand the cold better than the fish... I'd be patient with the tank and see how much it can recover. Some of those dead corals might make a comeback.
