how to get a cleaner tank

Sure it would live in a 100g but if you ever seen this thing in person when they're that big you'd never do it. Ofcorse it would take a couple of years to get that size. But you know these sites...they drop the minimum size as much as they can to sell some fish.

Right.  Yeah, I'm just going to get one, I know the whole rule with having more than one tang in your tang means baaaaad times for the fish.  But I wanted to get one at least.  They look awesome.  I figured that powder was going to be a long shot as well... I could do with a Naso though... as long as the one I get has the lipstick and is colorful then I'll be happy!  If I can find one soon then I'll probably find myself getting him within the next few weeks and tossing him in the QT for a month or two.  I'm excited!

In a 125? A couple of tangs should be fine. Yellow, sail, blues, purple, kole... avoid the bigger harder ones (like any with multiple tail spines.)
On topic though, you could also just run a micron filter (like in the Magnum filters) those polish a tank like all get out. Carbon works well for colors and odors ... like if the tank isn't clear looking throughout the sides. Polyfilters work even better than carbon or chemipure IMHO. I'm running a packed magnum of polyfilter right now in fact. They also turn black when exhausted whichever is easy to err in a clear magnum.

Naso's are beautiful but they do get huge! I like my powderbrown and like the powderblue they don't get quite as large.
See I heard just the opposite. I've heard that nano's are perfect for smaller tanks (100+ gallons) and the powder blue/brown are for the larger tanks because they're very similar to the hippo tang. If this isn't true, the please let me know and I will look at the powder blue tang. I LOVE how they look and would love to get one, I just thought it wasn't a possibility.

No Sir, they absolutely get quite large. They can get up to 18" in length just in body. The one up at the LFS down the street is easily 14-15" pluss add another 4-5" for the streamers and you can imagine what something that size would look like in a 5ft long aquarium. Not trying to discurage you at all but if you're reading your info from sites that sell fish I would sugguest reading up on any independent articals you can find instead. One site who sells the fish sugguest a 125G as a minimum while SWF.com sugguest a 75G tank minimum, are you kidding me? Now that's just downright desperate to sell some fish if you ask me. They're even advertising a 40G minumun for their Hippo Tangs and thats just rediculous to have an 8-9" fish in a 40G.
Alot of people say that powerbrown or blues are bad tank mates. That hasn't been the case with my powder brown at all. Infact he's really quite peacefull to his other tanks mates. But he was added last and he is the largest fish so nobody messes with him and he doesnt feel the need to pick on anybody I suppose. At best he'll probably only get to be about 8". I would love to have a Naso and I'm sure I could keep one for a while. But eventually if they are kept in too small a tank it will stunt their growth, stress them out and they more than likely will have health issues because they can't live a very active life since they are vorascious swimmers.
Eithe way, whatever Tang you do decide on...I would add them as your last fish.

So you're saying powder blue would be suitable for a 5' long tank? If you are then you're making me a very happy person right now. It will only grow to 8" max? If that's the case then I wouldn't see any problem keeping them in my tank.

No I was reffereing to a Pacific Blue aka (blue hippo). The Powder Blue is a different Tang. I think either one are much better suited to than a Naso just because they don't get nearly as large. Blue Hippos are probably known to be a little more peacefull. So many people say that Powder Blues and browns make bad tank mates. I don't know, I guess I just got lucky with my Powder Brown.

Wait wait wait... now you just threw a curve ball at me. I wanted a hippo a while back and everyone (including you I had thought) said the hippo would be WAY too big for my tank. He would need at least 6' of swimming room and although my tank was large enough gallon wise it wasn't nearly long enough. You're saying I can pick up a BLUE HIPPO TANG (aka DORIE
) and it will be ok in my tank for its LIFE?

I don't recall every saying anything about you not keeping a Hippo...only a Naso. If I did than I must have been confused but I don't remember that. IMO, yes a Hippo Tang would be one of your best bets. I had one for a little while...when I first purchased my 120G the old owners had a hippo in there as well as a yellow tang. I accidently killed em though trying to treat them because they had Ich...I didn't know what I was doing. But it was a good fish while I had it, didn't seem to hassle anybody.

Ironically, I wonder how many people name their clown fish Nemo, and their Hippos, Dorie. My wife used to call ours the same thing lol. I've never even seen finding Nemo!

Ok, I just did a great deal of research (as much as one can in 5 minutes) and found that I must have been dreaming up all these things I thought everyone had said. I see a tank of 100 gallons would be sufficient for a hippo tang. I'm extremely excited and I know my gf was way more bummed than I was when I had told her I can't get the hippo tang. As far as the blue hippo goes, would you still suggest I put it in the tank last? Even though it's a peaceful fish? I have my QT set up and have had it going for about 2 1/2 months now with absolutly nothing in it haha. I'd love to get a hippo tang this week if you would think it's ok to add them to the tank right now...

I have a little nephew that loves the movie and a little cousin that I used to watch on the weekends that loved it. Although I can't quote it on the fly I must say I was a big fan of the movie just because I enjoyed all the fish!

Sparty, I will say that Tangs are ones that you most deffinately want to quarantine. They are highly prone to getting Ich and the littlest things can set it off. You don't want that in your system. Quarantine this fish...for the sake of your own sanity!

Yes yes yes. I'm going to QT no doubt about it! I just wanted to make sure based on what you were saying if it were ok to put them in as the fourth fish in my tank. I will of course QT... I wouldn't think anything else based on everything I've read and everything I've heard I do not want to jeopordize my tank by not QT'ing. But would it be fine if I were to pick one up say... Wednesday and put him in the QT, or would you suggest I make him my last fish addition as well? Since they're peaceful I assumed they would go in with the first batch before I add any aggressive fish.

Say that 10x's really fast.

I've never tried the IIRC stuff...perhaps I'll look for it the next time I get some more. So far untill my 120G build gets done and I start running my sump I've always used canisters on my other tanks and I run the carbon in them. I change it out once a month...system stays stable, peramiters the same. I have heard other people saying you should only run it for like 24 hours but I've never had any problems running it for a month. Infact when I used to by the pouches that were designed for my rena filters they actually say to change once a month.
I've also heard that some people think there could be a link between running carbon and Tangs coming down with HLLE. Again, my powder brown seems healthy and happy. I can't comment on the effects it has on corals but people run it on reef tanks, so...I say give it a shot and see how you like it. If you notice anything negative than don't do it.
I could but, you wouldn't be around to hear me say it, and do it flawlessly.
??IIRC?? Its not a brand. "If I recall correctly" (IIRC) I still say the lignite is the best based on what I've read. I don't change mine out but once a month too. The only down fall could be,that the bacteria population that would build in the carbon, being removed from the system. Kinda like pulling bio balls out too fast.
Maybe I'm lost like this thread is.......

We do tend to stray down the path less traveled over here. I never know which one of Sparty's threads I'm on anymore. Can't really comment on which is the best...carbon itself all seems to be about the same to me. I don't see much difference from the more expensive stuff than I do the cheap stuff.

First we were talking about a snow storm when the pump came on, then we were talking about carbon...the next thing I know we were talking about finding Nemo.
